| While all of the shirts are upsetting to me -- and I have no doubt that there would be a similar outcry and protest here if similar t-shirts were produced for my hometown -- the "Suicide Watch" shirt is *extremely* disturbing to me. I do not at all get the "humor" that is supposed to be conveyed in this shirt's message. Does anyone else get it?? Can you explain it to me?? | |

| If it's funny, it's a really sick kind of funny. I don't get it either.

Yeah... Good thinking, Neko. Now that you mention it, I recall reading in the news some years back *somewhere* that I lived that a city ordinance was passed requiring local shops to keep obscene and drug-related t-shirts and ball-caps in a back room or behind a curtain... Sorta like the porn section at the video store, lol.

| The problem is that Orange Beach doesn't want these shirts worn in Orange Beach OR in Kansas. But I just don't know about restricting the actual sale of a phrase or of an image.
Can you buy porn magazines in Baldwin County/Orange Beach? |

| But I don't think you can trademark the name of a city or location. |

| I don't like the "Party with Sluts" saying. It won't be a commercial success unless it is publicized.
It appears to be a first Amendment issue. As repulsive the saying is, I'll defend someone's First Amendment's Rights regarding freedom of speech to say it.

| I agree, Eric. I can see a restriction on public obscenity when it comes to what is seen on a public street or beach. I cannot see outright prohibiting a business from selling a t-shirt with a vulgar phrase on it. And I do not think I want our lawmakers even going there no matter how repugnant the phrase is to me. |

I think it is very likely the community can and will pass an ordinance prohibiting offensive shirts from being worn or diplayed in public....the "T" Shirt sellers will probably abide by that ordinance. There are plenty of shirts available that are suitable to wear in public.

| The problem with an ordinance against "offensive" shirts is what exactly is the definition of offensive. What is offensive to one person isn't offensive to another. | |

Appeal and draw trash to the area? I just don't get it.

| Right, Jake. Who decides? I also have that concern but then obviously, some things are going to be offensive to the majority of people...like public nudity. Or the "F" word emblazoned on a shirt. But it has to be a reasonable ordinance. And just because I don't like a t shirt doesn't mean it should be deemed offensive or obscene. If an ordinance is passed, I can see the t shirt shops pushing the edges of what is considered offensive or obscene. |

| I'm sure that the shirts are offensive. I recall one time when my brother, my dad, and I were building a house and we had a car stereo (8-track) playing real loud while we worked. Woodstock was playing. Country Joe and the Fish came on "Gimme an F"... "Gimme a U"... blared out. My dad just muttered to himself... | |

| BINGO Neko, The best place to hit them is in the pocket by boycotting the places that sell the offensive shirts and the condos, bars, restaurants, and other places that allow people to wear them. Can you imagine people boycotting a concert, seafood festival, or the fair because of an offensive t-shirt? | |

I suspect that an ordinance would end up being more akin to a moving violation. I cannot see it being an arrestable offense.

| I would hope so, Ghost! Being arrested and hauled off to jail for wearing a particular t-shirt would just be wrong on several levels. However, would a lot of tourists really care or bother to pay the fine? |

| I think they should be given a ticket (a civil fine) and told to either cover up the obscene shirt on the spot or they must immediately leave the public area. And then if they refuse to comply, they can be arrested.
That's my thinking about how a clothing law should be imposed. |

I had to log in (I have an account to upload videos.) and jump through some username hoops. Essentially, a surfer went out on his board while a contest was underway... he wasn't a contestant... and refused orders to go back to shore. He was obstinate throughout the video and was beaten up pretty good in the water and was beaten on the beach. His board was destroyed too. You couldn't hear what was said, but I gather he was showing his ass and deserved a good beating.
