Great stuff, 3w! Thanks for sharing!! That blonde gal in the polka-dot bathing suit is sure a cutie, isn't she?? Wink

I don't think they offer it anymore (or currently, anyhow), but when I lived in the area, I took a Surf Science course @UWF... it was really neat and I learned a lot. I need to dig out my textbook and refresh my recomemmory.

Awesome, 3w! Thanks for sharing another!

While I lived up in Humboldt we had a bad storm one year where 30-ft waves crashed over the jetty. Several of my friends went out surfing that day, including one of my best friends... I understand the draw and the thrill of dangerous sports if anyone does, but I was terrified for each one of them and was not at ease until I'd heard from each one that they'd returned home in one piece. I can't seem to find any video of that event (likely because I cannot recall what year it was), but here's a clip of a more recent event of waves breaching the jetty... Wouldn't catch me dead out on the jetty in surf like that.

Oh, and P.S. That jetty is a lot taller than it looks in the video. The wave heights are dwarfing it.

The owner of Surf Smooth, John Russell, was one of the best lead guitar players around in the '60's and '70's. His dad (John Sr.) bought one of the houseboats that we used to make at Holiday Harbor and the boat was named John's Junk. It got a lot of use.

John inherited a portion of the Flight Deck from his dad and I remember that he used to serve me a ton of free drinks there (puts him right UP there with the good guys Razz ).

This one?

Pretty badass!

In any case, above is some pretty intense surf... in my Surf Science class @UWF we studied the Mavericks. As you're likely aware, it is a *phenomenally* dangerous place to surf. Wikipedia link w/some AWESOME photos @bottom:

On the subject of sorta knowing folks in the industry, my great aunt and uncle lived in Laguna Beach (built their own home on 1-1/2 acres in the early '40s) and my mom and her brothers used to go stay with them every summer when they were growing up and got to know Hobie, of Hobie Cats, Boards, &c. They always said that even after he "got famous" he was absolutely a salt of the earth, truly kind and generous, and amazing individual. Mom hasn't seen him in... oh, maybe 5 or 10 years now I guess, but I always enjoyed hearing stories about him.

YES THATS IT. the guys board "tombstoning" the guys paddling in omg the insane free fall drops the guy caught in "boneyards" it goes fast and you kind of have to know what u are looking at.

THE wipeout the tow in guy falls off in the face if you look carefully you will see his body in the " lip" going over we call it "going over the falls" and you can hear the gleeful surfers on the cliffs overlooking saying OH NO OH NO OH NO

Love listening to those guys yelling and moaning every body blow their mates are taking out there.

Two things that horrify every surfer, going over the falls with the lip or going over backwards when you dont make it paddling out and over a huge one

So i say hahahahahahah thank god it wasnt me ....

This site, Teahupoo, has the thickest waves I have seen. There is immense power in those waves.

Quote :
This day at Teahupoo- Aug 27th 2011 during the Billabong Pro waiting period is what many are calling the biggest and gnarliest Teahupoo ever ridden. Chris Bryan was fortunate enough to be there working for Billabong on a day that will go down in the history of big wave surfing. The French Navy labeled this day a double code red prohibiting and threatening to arrest anyone that entered the water.
Kelly Slater described the day by saying "witnessing this was a draining feeling being terrified for other people's lives all day long, it's life or death. Letting go of that rope one time can change your life and not many people will ever experience that in their life."
All images where shot by Chris Bryan using the Phantom HD Gold camera. To see more of Chris' work check out his website. WWW.CHRISBRYANFILMS.COM

You all have got me on a kick and I probably spent a couple hours yesterday watching epic footage of guys surfing the Mavericks, mostly.
