BOSTON — National Grid is warning customers that they will see a significant increase in their electricity bills beginning in November.

The company recently filed with the state to adjust rates for the winter and says bills could rise by 37 percent because of higher power supply prices — which the company describes as “the cost of the electricity National Grid buys for customers and passes on without a mark up.”

“Because that commodity has increased in price so much, customers are going to see a significantly higher bill this winter than they did last winter,” National Grid spokesman Jake Navarro told WBUR. “For a typical residential customer, who uses 500 kilowatt hours a month, we’re talking about a $33 impact to their electric bill. That’s definitely a significant increase.”

I'm sure theres a plan behind this too. Another GOV intervention to make poeple dependants to pay thier high electric bills or freeze to death.

"Supply" prices. Fuel?

Southern Company (Gulf Power and others), has long-term contracts for fuels... something like 10 or 20 years... where prices are set by contract. They're also required to accept shipments, even if the price of coal, for instance, goes down. That probably ain't gonna happen, though... prices of coal going down, that is.

So, our prices for electricity won't go up drastically anytime soon based upon fuel costs, because their fuel costs are essentially stable. Other costs will rise, though... like costs for capital expenditures, vehicles, gasoline/diesel for vehicles, etc.

The prices will increase as much as the customers allow them to increase.. If the demand goes down, the excess in energy will increase and in time, the prices SHOULD go down..

The State Public Service Commissions are the bodies that allow rates to increase. Many times, the requested rate increases are denied, or reduced by the PSCs.

Well Obama declared war on coal fired plants and is causing many to close. So it's directly his fault.

Sometimes things can be Obama's fault and I respect people who point that out. But when somebody blames Obama for everything it's like the boy that cried wolf. After awhile I just have to quit listening to them because I realize they have been driven mad by the haters in the media.

The states are responsible for letting power companies raise their bills. It doesn't have a thing in the world to do with Obama.

Coal is a lousy way to provide energy.

Coal is a great way to provide energy. Its very effective and economical.

Coal produced 39% of the entire countries energy in 2013. <<< significant? Yes

And it is a well known FACT, that Obama has declared a war on coal.

What was it Obama said about coal plants?

The problem with coal is the pollution it generates.

Particulate matter (soot) is a problem. Mercury, lead, arsenic, CO2, SO2, oxides of Nitrogen... yeah, combustion of coal puts out some nasty shit.

Natural Gas is probably the most reliable power plant fuel. Wind and solar are clean, but inconsistent means of power generation, and geothermal sources are cleaner, but areas where it can be utilized is limited.

We all know about Nuclear. I hope that the nuclear process that uses Thorium will pan out. It promises much safer and cleaner operation.

About all that issues forth from modern coal plants is water vapor. Your greenies are living in the 60s.

Blaming energy rates and other problems on Obama is like blaming gasoline prices and other problems on Bush..  BOTH are false and spread by people with partisan political agendas......
