I envy you your Buck stove, Eric!
Back when I lived on the farm in the boonies in '77, I had what was then called a "Keene" heater. It was an aluminum wood-burning stove, and yes, low-priced and thus available on a college student's budget.
That winter turned out to be one of the coldest we had experienced in years, with snow on the ground continuously from November through late March.
That lil' ol' Keene heater made it through that winter just fine.
