Antivirus Security Pro Empty
PostSubject: Antivirus Security Pro   Antivirus Security Pro EmptyTue Oct 22, 2013 5:09 pm

Last Saturday, I spent a couple of hours removing a virus called Antivirus Security Pro from a friend's laptop. This bad boy will not allow you to run any other programs and it tells you your system is loaded with viruses and you must buy their product to clean it.

Make a mental note about what antivirus software you are running. When you visit an infected website, a window will open up that says it found viruses and "click OK to remove them". If you click OK, you are screwed. If it wasn't your antivirus software telling you that you are infected, PLEASE IGNORE any popups saying you are infected.

Clicking OK gives the virus permission to install on your computer.

For the life of me, I cannot think of their names right now, but there are a couple more of these same types floating around out there. I am not a computer pro, but the best advice I can give is to trust the anti-virus you currently have installed. For what it is worth, I use Comodo Internet Security and have for a very long time. So far(knock on wood) it has never let me down. McAfee is such a memory hog I refuse to use it and Norton is as useless as teats on a boar hog.

I quit McAfee about 12 years ago. I quit Norton when 360 first came out. (It seemed like the computer could run 360 and nuttin' else... what a memory hog!)

I have had pretty good luck with Kaspersky the last few years.

PostSubject: Ad-aware wrecked my computer   Antivirus Security Pro EmptyTue Jan 14, 2014 8:27 pm

I've been having problems with my new computer lately and wanted to warn anyone against downloading Ad-Aware antivirus. I had a slight problem with ads popping up and thought it would help. Instead it installed a virus called "conduit" into it that allowed me to do nothing more with my computer than click every second to get rid of a pop up or new ad it installed. I reformatted with a new copy of Windows 7 professional (my old disc was Windows 7 and the company doesn't like the registration key anymore on it) and reformatting with 7 pro solved the problem. Of course, it was a 2 day job what with saving my programs, reinstalling, etc.
I can see why some people don't want to work on computers for a living.

Now I'm at a loss as to what protection to reload on my computer. I'm thinking along the lines of "none." McAfee, as mentioned, slows the thing down to a crawl and Norton isn't any better.
Since I discovered awhile back that I can simply restore windows to a previous point and get rid of problems that way, I may just depend on my restore process from now on to take care of any new viruses.
I probably should have thought of that before I bought the 7Pro disc, but I had honestly forgotten.
Dang, I'm getting old.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security (antivirus) and have had good luck with it the last 4-5 years.  I know people that run AVG, a free antivirus software.  AVG isn't as good as Kaspersky overall, but it is free.

I like the free Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool too.  It can remove lots of viruses or trojans.  Here is the link to it. http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/malware-removal.aspx

Here is a link to Microsoft about system restore in Windows 7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/system-restore
