| http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/alleged-rape-victim-files-suit-to-remove-us-naval-academy-superintendent-from-case/2013/09/05/1da496c8-164d-11e3-be6e-dc6ae8a5b3a8_story.html Raped Naval Academy victim files suit before Academy sweeps her complaint under the rug. This is an interesting twist. There are no winners here. (But I think she is doing the right thing for her situation.) A few excerpts from the article... - Quote :
- The female midshipman who has accused three former football players of sexually assaulting her at a party filed a federal lawsuit Thursday to force the U.S. Naval Academy’s superintendent, Vice Adm. Michael H. Miller, to give up authority over the case.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Baltimore, alleges that Miller made it clear in comments to returning midshipmen that the administration was unhappy about the negative publicity the case had received.
The complaint also says the superintendent showed bias against the alleged victim by requiring her to endure a long and hostile cross-examination during an Article 32 hearing — the military equivalent of a grand jury proceeding — on the allegations. It seems obvious that the Naval Academy has no intentions of finding truth... and only wants this case (and the woman) go away. Her interrogations were non-stop and lasted for a dozen hours at a time, repeating the same questions over and over, hoping to break her and see if they can catch her describing the events differently. | |

| She knows that the Academy Superintendent can take the proceedings of the Article 32 hearings and simply decide the case has no merit... making it go away... as has (apparently) happened in the past. | |

| There are no winners in these cases. Seems like the more "training" these people get the worse the situation becomes - more likely though that it's just become more public than before. During my more than 20 years of service I can't recall a single case of rape occurring at the commands I served in. | |
