I just can't see fit to get rid of boards. I have them here in the garage in P'cola and the two newer boards (6' and 9'6"), I gave to my oldest son.

My oldest board is very heavy and it was shaped by Nelson Goo at the Hutson Surf Shop in 1963. I learned to surf on that board in '63 or so. It wasn't mine at the time. It is 10'4".

I remember that Yancy was out there with his new board and the older bigger guys were trying to trick Yancy into waxing the bottom of his board too. "It'll go faster" they said. Yancy would have none of it.

Ok eric here is my nelson goo story. I had just started surfing me guy yaste, ben fairey.
Our moms would take turns dropping us off at pbeach pier. At this time the cross was the spot but they would't go that far. Sometimes she would drop us off at the toll booth to save the dime and we had to paddle little sabine to get there.

I drug my board to the cross so many times the glass on the inside rail wore thin. I was 13 and the board was 9.8 and weghed mot likely 25 pounds or more.

It was one of those days and the cross was huge. I had tried to get out 4 or 5 times and was sitting on the beach dejectedly head in hands. I heard this guy walking up saying aren't you coming out grom?

It was Nelson. He was a hawaiin, tall and lean surfer like srrong. He was the best in Pensacola at the time in the Navy. I told him i could not get out. He said follow me kid.
We waded into cross surf rolling all the way from the outside in to the shore. He jumped on and took off! No way would i let him get away, as soo as he got over the immediate shore pound he jumped to his knees to start knee paddling out. I was right behind passling as hard as i could. We zigged and zagged our way out and amazed i found myself sitting in the line up.

It changed me my surfing and in retrospect my life. The simple act of the first time you get out as a kid in really big surf. I will always remember that day and Nelson Goo,

So, are you in this group from 1965 or so? I don't own the rights to the picture.

I have tried to identify people in the picture and had some help from the PNJ forum a while back. Can you help identify people? I mostly surfed Gulf Beach (Perdido Key).

I was a facebook friend with Sharon Kane, but she passed away a year or so ago.

David Petty was my Brother-in-Law and died when he dropped a pistol and it discharged and shot him in the chest, killing him.

Vince Seely was the former Escambia County Sheriff.

I'm surprised that I haven't labeled the shorter dude leaning against the tiki. Henry ?

I went to school (Escambia) with Ray Malonowski and that sure looks like him. His dad was a professional photographer and I suspect he owns the copyright to the photo.

Also, I think some folks thought that Yancy was not correctly identified.

The year was 1968 i used to get 10 dollars per challenger sold since at the time i was the team hot shot surfer lolol

Sounds like someone is getting rid of a quiver for one SUP. Remember, you need a flashlight and whistle onboard for that. Probably need to carry a letter of permission from your mom, too.

lol... I just looked him up, also noting he's got 11 1st rankings and is the youngest AND oldest to hold the title).... plus to get a better look at his mug and see his stats... I like 'em lean and muscular, and he's only about a week younger than me.
