Bill to repeal "Stand Your Ground" law is handily defeated

By an 11-2 vote, the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee defeated the bill (HB 4003) by Rep. Alan Williams, D-Tallahassee, saying the current law gives Floridians more protection from crime.   “We stand and defend what is ours,” said Rep. Jimmie Smith, R-Inverness. ” ‘Stand your ground’ is core to our American way of life.”

I didn't think the Trayvon Martin case was a good example to use when arguing the repeal on the Stand Your Ground law anyway. Properly applied, I think it is a good law.

Happy to hear it. My cousin, his buddy who went woodcutting with us, and I were just discussing castle laws while we breaked for lunch. We were in agreement that it's surprising that Alaska doesn't have castle laws. Of course, it is a constitutional carry state, and I'd have to look at what our specific state laws are with respect to that, but no castle laws.

That's good news!...The stand your ground law was not the defense in the Martin Trial...Zimmerman was not gulity on self defense...But you are correct in your thought though...both Zimmerman and Martin had ample opportunity and did retreat from imminent danger and this became an attack on Zimmerman and he acted in accordance with self defense standards...as stated by the verdict of the jury
