The perils of consuming fructose can be eliminated by drinking large quantities of cereal malt beverage or what is known as beer.

Ordinary drinking is good but for sheer power over fructose one must guzzle beer.

Here is something else about fructose.

A new UCLA study is the first to show how a diet steadily high in fructose slows the brain, hampering memory and learning

There is no doubt that Eric makes the best Margaritas on this planet but they should have a warning label stating that "Drinking this concoction may cause a person to reach for a left handed cigarette." bounce

http://www.tequila.net/blanco-tequila-reviews.html?order=rating I like Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo tequila. It tastes better to me than Patron (an overrated, overhyped and expensive brand). Of the tequilas that Winn Dixie's liquor store stocks, I prefer Don Eduardo, but it's more expensive.

If your blender isn't a HOSS (ours is a 2-HP Vita Mix), you'll need bigger diameter straws. We order Bubble Tea Straws by the case. One blender I don't recommend is the Ninja. It doesn't matter how long it blends, the ice never makes it to smoothie consistency. We had good blending with Cuisinart blenders but they don't last us too long.

Always leave at least 1" of space in the top of the blender to allow for expansion. Also, my blender carafe's graduations go up to 65 ounces, but you can probably put 70 ounces in it. (Adjust your liquid measurements accordingly if your carafe is smaller)

Thanks, Eric! I was wondering where you could get agave nectar hereabouts. I usually bring a few bottles back from Arizona when I visit.

Granny, the Publix at Innerarity has it I know. The Publix up here in Hoover has it too. Both have 4-5 choices of Agave to pick from.

Agave nectar's glycemic index and glycemic load are comparable to fructose, which in turn has a much lower glycemic index and glycemic load than table sugar (sucrose). There is a lot of fructose naturally in Agave.

I like the flavor of Agave nectar, which is very different than commercial fructose which is usually derived from sugar cane, sugar beets and corn. A good tequila will have a hint of Agave, since Tequila is made from the Agave plant.

The trick is you are trying to keep up your carbs, potassium, and salt levels. The make energy Gels that contain all these things. Many cycling guys use them to keep from "Bonking" or running out of energy. Rule of thumb is to take maybe one Gel per hour. You have to eat something when you ride. Same with water. One 20 oz bottle per hour if not, it is cramp time(At least for me). Here is a article on making home made energy Gels. Gels work great they are just not very popular. ..................I'm a regular guy who likes to ride, race and tinker with mountain bikes. I also have the urge (since childhood) to take stuff apart to see how it works. Usually this behavior has helped me accumulate a good deal of worthless broken stuff. But one day, while cycling with my buddy Dave, my curiosity turned to goop. Specifically PowerBar Gel and GU.

Dave and I are the kind of guys that ride really hard. I don't think there's been an occasion where we decided to just take the next ride slow. Anyway, we usually down a few packets of energy gel on every ride. At about a dollar a pop, it doesn't take long until we realized the cost of all this. So one day on the trail, as I glanced at the ingredients of these parcels of fuel, I thought, "There's got to be a way to make this from scratch."

Flashback to Three Months Earlier

I'm at the local farmer's market buying Clover honey because of its reported benefits for combating allergy symptoms. I find a press release from the National Honey Board about a study showing positive results for use of honey as compared to other carbohydrate sources when used during competitive athletic training. That kind of stuck in my brain for a while.

Flashback to Present

So one rainy day later I was taking apart my PowerBar Gel. The packages are labeled with a wealth of information. Listed are the ingredients on the pack and the "Nutrition Facts" charts. In general, the important stuff in PowerBar Gel are the 25 grams of carbs, 45 milligrams of sodium, 35 milligrams of potassium, and the vitamins C and E.

The United States Department of Agriculture does a good job of getting those nutrition facts into their database. They actually have every food in the U.S. online at usda.gov. You can peruse and compare the nutritional content of Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch versus Count Chocula if you like. My interest in their site was the abbreviated food database that I could download in a Microsoft Excel format. This document is the key to getting the nutritional content of any possible mixture of foods.

The first food item I looked up in the database was honey. Surprise! It has a bunch of good carbohydrates and vitamins in it. Honey alone is nutritionally very close to my goal of homebrew power goop, but it lacks a bit of sodium and potassium. So where can I get a good source of potassium? Mush up a banana? Maybe some nuts?

Suddenly, I find that molasses has a ton of potassium. If you can find blackstrap molasses, it has even more! As for the sodium, I'll just add some salt. So out of my research, here's the recipe:

Homebrew Power Goop

7 and 1/3 tablespoons of honey
3/4 teaspoons of blackstrap molasses
1/10 teaspoons (just shy of 1/8 tsp) of table salt
Be sure to mix everything together well. It should make enough to fill a five-serving GU flask.

This recipe works nicely. You may see some bubbles on the surface, but that is just a natural occurrence of the molasses. Neither honey nor molasses needs to be refrigerated, so you can keep it in your pocket all day and even use it the following week. I probably wouldn't go much past a week, but it should still be good.

The problem with honey is that the Chinese microfilter the pollen out of their honey, mix corn syrup in it and dump it cheaply in the US. I don't trust 'em. I like the taste of honey but I am leery about it now. I'm looking for a brand that doesn't come from China.

Some people have been caught taking China "honey" and selling it in bulk from a different country and labeling it as coming from their country. It was another SE Asia country, but I cannot remember the name of it.

According to http://healthland.time.com/2011/08/22/tainted-chinese-honey-may-be-on-u-s-store-shelves/, Another favorite con among Chinese brokers was to mix sugar water, malt sweeteners, corn or rice syrup, jaggery, barley malt sweetener or other additives with a bit of actual honey. In recent years, many shippers have eliminated the honey completely and just use thickened, colored, natural or chemical sweeteners labeled as honey.

I'm going to look it up, but I think Sue Bee honey is one of the brands suspected of using adulterated honey.

Here is a list of the honey tested by Food Safety News that showed no traces of pollen.

Removal of all pollen from honey "makes no sense" and is completely contrary to marketing the highest quality product possible, Mark Jensen, president of the American Honey Producers Association, told Food Safety News.

I don't know of any U.S. producer that would want to do that. Elimination of all pollen can only be achieved by ultra-filtering and this filtration process does nothing but cost money and diminish the quality of the honey," Jensen said.

"In my judgment, it is pretty safe to assume that any ultra-filtered honey on store shelves is Chinese honey and it's even safer to assume that it entered the country uninspected and in violation of federal law," he added.

The folks that tested the honey said that honey labeled as "Organic" was more likely to have pollen in it.

I bought honey from Hillcrest Farms. It is unpasteurized and natural. It turned to sugar inside of a week, but I still use it. The pollen init helps build up a natural resistance to local allergens.
