| Most of you may have seen me say several times over the years that I have taken a lot of self defense courses. Not only that, but I fully credit my training in self defense (both physical and with firearms) in saving my life and from something truly horrifying happening to me on several occasions. I feel very strongly that self-defense is important for everyone, and believe with all of my heart that in this day and age it is absolutely critical for both women and children.
The best physical self defense course I have ever taken BY FAR was a semester-long course called R.A.D. Self Defense at UWF (3-credits). It taught by police officers, is for ladies only, and when I was there it was open to the public. They also offer an R.A.D. Self Defense course for children. I took the course twice, not because I'd forgotten the material but because repetition is the key to self defense being a second-nature response when you really need it.
They teach you a lot of incredibly valuable things in the course, of particular interest to me, how to disable an attacker who is much taller than you and twice your weight. Just one example I am 5'6-1/2 and weighed less than 110-lbs when I took the course and learned to very easily break the nose and knock "ass over tea kettle" an attacker who was 6'2" and 200-lbs.
I believe there will be courses in the Fall and probably Summer for children. See below for more detailed information. Fellas, take care of the ladies in your life and encourage them to enroll in this amazing course. Ladies, "just do it!" It's a lot of fun and could save your life one day!
PEM 2405 Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) Self-Defense for Women 3 sh (may not be repeated for credit) Introduction to basic self defense skills, escape and avoidance strategies, offensive and defensive postures, defensive techniques and simulated attacks. Includes an exploration of violence prevention and victim abuse community services. Basic fitness principles including strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness will be addressed. Intended for women only http://catalog.uwf.edu/courseinformation/courses/pem/
Sexual Assault Awareness Week http://www.uwf.edu/cws/wellness/programs/sexualassault.cfm

| I would love to take this class, Riceme. It's the timing that wouldn't work for me right now. I will definitely keep it in mind, plus I will print the brochure so I can pass this information on to other women.
THANKS!!!!!

| I need to get Christine back into Taekwondo. She has a black belt in it and taught it for a couple of years... then we moved to another city.
She's tough as nails, but you wouldn't think of her that way. When she was in second grade in grammar school, she could whip any boy in the school! They called her "Queen Wildcat".
Another girl made the mistake of picking on her in high school. Christine said she "woke up on top of this bloody girl and she was pounding on her and people were pulling her off the other girl".

| Ooo, Christine and I would get along just fine! And (wouldn't ya know it!) "Wildcat" is one of my nicknames too! ...although for different reasons. | |

| Aww, she didn't hit him very hard! If I'm going to the trouble to hit someone, they're winding up on my floor... one way or another. | |

| Riceme, you and I think alike in many ways......me thinks.
I enrolled my Daughters and myself in a course when they were approx 10/11. The course was pretty ok, but the instructor turned out to be a sex offender (yes, record on file).
While I knew there was something wrong and tried to beat him (literally) it was not until later that I learned of his record.
The lesson learned is that we need to know the instructor!

The lesson learned is that we need to know the instructor! We are indeed very alike in may ways! When I took this course it was taught primarily by two female LEOs plus one other woman, and we'd have male LEOs come in, not for their instruction, but for us to beat ladies the crap out of. :-] They came in the first week of class to be introduced to us, and if I remember correctly at least one of them gave a lecture. But they never, ever grappled with us on the ground... when we had fight-contact with them it was always from a standing position. Our instructors were VERY sensitive to the fact that many or most of us in the course had been assaulted before, and that was why we were taking the course. The women who had NOT ever been assaulted in the course were in the great minority.
