Some people are just mean, ugly jerks

I considered putting this under a "News" thread topic but, urgh. Sadly, this reminds me of some of our buddies at the PDF forum. And of course, it should surprise no one that this happened in my lovely home state of California.

Sports Bar Rings Up Customers As 'Fat Girls'

Christine Duran's jaw dropped when she got the bill for her dinner on
Thursday night. It wasn't the price that stung but the way an employee
had identified their table on the receipt: "Fat Girls."


Duran had gone out to dinner with two of her other friends at a
Chilly D's Sports Lounge, which is part of a casino in Stockton,
California. She told a local ABC affiliate: "I got the bill, I was looking at bill [and]
I was like, ‘Why does this receipt say 'fat girls?'"


Right away she and her friends complained to the manager, but they
weren't impressed with his response. Duran said he "had like a smirk on
his face, like it was funny but trying not to laugh." The manager
offered 25 percent and then 50 percent off the bill, but the women
refused to pay.


In a Facebook post, the restaurant said that it fired the employee who put

"fat girls" on the receipt, and it is retraining its employees:

What happened to those girls at our bar was unacceptable
and is in no way a reflection of how we run our business. We are just
as appalled at what happened to these ladies and this employee has been
immediately terminated. We are a family run business and strive to make
our customers feel welcomed and appreciated. My family is embarrassed
and we are holding a full staff meeting to re-train all of our remaining
employees so that this never happens again. In no manner do we want to
be associated with this type of behavior and it is devastating that one
persons behavior has reflected on our family's establishment. My hope
is, that we can rectify the situation by taking immediate action with
this employee and by extending our most sincere apologies to these
ladies and anyone that has been affected by this situation.

This isn't the first time we've heard of servers insulting customers on
their bills, and it won't be the last. So far servers have used bills
and receipts to call customers "McStinkyNigger", "Lady Chinky Eyes" and
"Ching" and "Chong." (Has Urban Dictionary or someone come up with a
portmanteau to describe this phenomenon yet?)

Well THAT was weird! I wonder why they wouldn't post in the first one??

The girls should have paid the bill, but not the tip. It is funny how indignant behavior equates to assumptions that everything is automatically free.

Whoever put that language on the ticket (server?) deserved public humiliation. Instead of firing, perhaps they should have been paraded out to the "girls" and made to apologize.

I agree that people today, especially Americans, take this whole "you offended me, so now you have to gimme my crap for free" thing way too far. But (I can't remember if this was in the article or the news clip) the shift manager actually sneered, chuckled and laughed at the gals when they initially brought it to his attention, then smiled and told them that the best he could do was to give them 25% off (or whatever it was)... no apology. Talk about adding insult to injury!

The jerkoff (Jeff) who had actually keyed-in "Fat Girls" on their ticket had already left the restaurant, as his shift was over. What I would have done is called his a55 back in, telling him that his till was short, there was an emergency, whatever... anything, to make him apologize to those gals, but the whole thing was taken seriously at all until the restaurant manager (not the a*hole shift manager, above) was made aware of what had gone down, so there was no chance of that happening, particularly since the shift manager thought it was funny to refer to their customers and patrons as "Fat Girls."

If you watch the video clip, one of the gals cried on camera about it and a second got choked-up and had to take a moment before continuing on. My BS Detector is dialed-in and calibrated. This was not a show for the cameras, they were truly embarrassed, and those were real tears. Broke my cold, black, dead little heart.

So yeah, in absence of any sort of apology that night, good for them that they didn't have to pay their check. It serves the establishment right for having such a DB shift manager, not to mention good ole Jeff at the till. That's my way of thinking on the subject anyhow.

One of my hot-buttons is people making fun of overweight folks. It's just cruel.

I am definitely overweight, but I carry a lot of muscle too. Over at PNJ, one user called me "tubbo". I took a shirtless pic of my upper half with my lats and pecs puffed out (and sucked in a bit of gut) and with my arms extended to show arm muscles. My arms are pretty well developed as well as my lats. I invited that user to meet me somewhere and we'd discuss my "tubbiness". That user shut up about my weight.

I lost 40 pounds about a year ago, but I have hit a plateau at 240.

I didn't like being called overweight either.

That's terrible. I never saw it, so it must have taken place during one of my many "leaves of absence" from that cesspool. I very likely would have given that poster "what-for" and then some.

During my life I've generally always been thin, but twice because my thyroid went out of whack and I didn't realize it, my weight shot way up. I'm sure there were comments I never heard, but to my face, it hurt me tremendously that my teensy, petite mom and grandma would laugh and smile, smack me on my butt and call me "gordita" which is like "fatty" or "chubby" in Spanish, or "El Gordo" which is like "the fat one" in Spanish. They'd also make comments while laughing about my ass being "broader than an axe handle," which it was most assuredly not, but it's just a very ugly, hurtful saying. And shoot, my mom worked with me and knew good and well that I hardly ate a damned thing and exercised ALL THE TIME. I guess she thought I was going home and eating a box of Ding Dongs and a whole package of Oreos every night or something. "Whatever."

Two of my cousins have had trouble losing weight after having children, and my mom and grandma constantly harp them about losing weight. I make sure that at every opportunity I tell them both that they are just as beautiful as they have always been, and so long as they're happy and healthy they don't need to change a damned thing.

I have never taken kindly to people disparaging folks who are overweight, but my sensitivity to the issue was certainly turned up a few notches because of those hurtful experiences.
