| Subject: Susan G. Komen Foundation spends almost a million dollars of donor money per year bullying other charities that use the word CURE in their names. Wed Oct 21, 2015 4:17 pm | |
| Article that got me started on this thread. Susan G. Komen for the Cure... yeah, right. They spend only 20% of their donations on research. Their CEO and president, Hala G. Moddelmog, made $531,924, plus $26,683 in change. That's more than President Obama makes. The Komen VP makes over $400,000 per year. - Quote :
- In addition to raising millions of dollars a year for breast cancer research, fundraising giant Susan G. Komen for the Cure has a lesser-known mission that eats up donor funds: patrolling the waters for other charities and events around the country that use any variation of "for the cure" in their names.
So far, Komen has identified and filed legal trademark oppositions against more than a hundred of these Mom and Pop charities, including Kites for a Cure, Par for The Cure, Surfing for a Cure and Cupcakes for a Cure--and many of the organizations are too small and underfunded to hold their ground.
"It happened to my family," said Roxanne Donovan, whose sister runs Kites for a Cure, a family kite-flying event that raises money for lung cancer research. "They came after us ferociously with a big law firm. They said they own 'cure' in a name and we had to stop using it, even though we were raising money for an entirely different cause." They even object to charities that use the color pink. - Quote :
- Sue Prom, who started a small dog sledding fundraiser for breast cancer called "Mush for the Cure" in Grand Marais, Minn., said she was shocked to hear from Komen's lawyers this summer asking that she change the name of her event or face legal proceedings.
"I had to call the trademark helpline, because I had no idea what I was doing," said Prom, who runs the annual sled race with her husband and friend. "We pay for the expenses out of our pockets, and we've never personally made a dime from it. We have t-shirts, sweatshirts, domain names, posters, stationery, all with 'Mush for the Cure' on it. What do we do with all the materials now? How are we gonna defend ourselves? We're not like Komen."
Prom said she's been running the event for six years, and the most she has raised for the National Breast Cancer Foundation is $25,000. Before the NBCF could accept the money, they warned her to file for a trademark to protect her event legally against the Komen Foundation. But now that Komen has opposed Mush's trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Prom is looking for a pro bono lawyer to help her figure out what to do next.

That's why there have been a lot of articles dealing with charities/donations...people should know just how much of their money is going to where they intend...There hideous salaries and overhead costs need to be disclosed...Locally give to the Waterfront Mission especially around Thanksgiving/Christmas and they tell you exactly what your donations will buy...

| The best charities are the ones that accept things like food donations and immediately distribute it to the needy. These national "non-profits" are money machines for their staff with very little accountability. Most of them spend a large amount (more than they actually use for helping their intended audience) hiring dial for dollars companies to raise even more money. If you really want to blow lunch look at some of the things our government spends millions on for "grants".
Here's just one example of thousands - a grant for $500K: Strengthening Academic Integrity in Ukrainian Higher Education - how many U.S. schools could use an extra 500K to educate our kids?

http://www.grants.gov/view-opportunity.html?oppId=279709 The Government is very CHARITABLE.....with the money that doesn't belong to them....Easy to hand out when you didn't or don't have to earn/work for it and for them they have an ENDLESS supply of money from fools that allow them to do this....

| I have at least two very close relatives who have had breast cancer, and both women hate it when October comes around. They have both successfully fought the disease and have been cancer free for several years, and the yearly spectacle of pink bras, pink football socks, pink everything is a reminder of a time in their lives that was not very pleasant. Breast cancer is one of several diseases which is readily curable with early detection. Both of these ladies got regular mammograms and both live today because they believed in preventative medicine. There are many other diseases out there that need funding for research far more than does breast cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of them that comes to my mind. ALS is another. I'd give money to those kind of organizations before I'd give to one that supports Breast Cancer research.
