A tanker loaded with $100 million of crude oil that has been at the center of a dispute over Iraq's oil billions vanished off the coast of Texas on Thursday.

The Kurdish tanker disappeared from Coast Guard radar screens following a month of legal wrangling over whether it can offload its cargo in the U.S.

As the disintegration of Iraq amid mounting violence continues, the semi-autonomous regime in Kurdistan – in the north of Iraq – is trying to cash in on Iraq's oil reserves and export its own crude

In the past, embargoed oil tankers have transferred their contents at sea to tankers that aren't red-listed, which then unload their cargo.

This Kurdish tanker has been in the Gulf for a while. It's not like it sank or anything. At least, I hope it didn't sink.

well they said it disappeared off radar and that it had not unload its cargo, so I'm assuming they were not expecting it to unload at sea? or if it had unloaded the recipient of that cargo has not said anything?

Never the less, its concerning that it has disappeared off radar in the gulf of mexico.

How can it just disappear off radar?

The captain turned off the identifying beacon, or commanded crew to do so.

If that's the case, its even more concerning. Why would he do that?

and btw, I do think we have more sophisticated technology to track a ship in the gulf without them having to have a beacon turned on.

infra red? space?

He would do that so that he could go home... tired of the political tug of war, or received a threat from Iraq, medical emergency,... lots of possibilities. Not that easy to spot a vessel that has turned off its beacon. There are literally thousands of tankers out there, many thousands of freighters... a piece of hay in a haystack. The images you could see of the close-up of name of the tanker from the article you posted were taken when the beacon was still on. I'm sure there are satellites and ahh, "other" airships out there searching for it, but I would not want that job... Not likely to find it before they berth at their destination, wherever that might be.

And yeah, you can track "a ship" after its beacon is turned off but it is just that, "a ship"... it is no longer a specific, named ship. Unless you comb through every piece of hay in the haystack, like I said above.

Id think tracking a Kurdish ship in the gulf of mexico might be as important as tracking and taking pictures of the gulf oil spill? we had really good pictures of that.

It's easy to track an oil spill... it's a big giant blob of oil in the water. Look, Chrissy... this is a vessel tracking website. It only services a few steamship lines... not nearly all of them, so this doesn't show a fraction of the vessels on the water. Try to find the missing tanker without the beacon turned on.

I might just be a little too old fashioned.

Because im thinkin a Kurdish tanker loaded with oil in the gulf might just be a threat if it disappears. I mean lots of muslim peeps on there and there are certainly enough facts to say some of them might be traitors of good doers.

So all Im sayin is when that beacon went oFF. A shit load frenzy of helicopters, planes and national guards would have fled to that area like flies on shit.

Not to worry, Chrissy.  They cannot unload their oil, so they turned off their beacon so they become "invisible" of sorts.  They can then motor over to meet up with another tanker, transfer their cargo to a "legal" tanker, which will then offload the cargo.

If it had sank, there would be a massive slick, but we ain't seein' any.

I'll bet that the next time we see the tanker, it will be riding high... empty.
