Chicago---36 shootings/36 Hours. The Mayor and Police Chief's solution: tougher guns laws needed in a city with some of the toughest laws in the nation. The thugs dont seem to have a problem but it's better to make laws that already law abiding citizens follow?

Reports in Chicago Magazine claim that the Mayor and Police Chief 'cooked the stats' on crime in order to say the crime rates had fallen. Maybe the biggest laugher....Emanuel is thinking of a presidential run in 2016.

By standing by and doing nothing....has created a war zone controlled by the thugs. If they were just killing each other the problem would be solved but there are innocent people caught in the middle and the city is ignoring their needs.

Look around at Pensacola. There is rarely a day that the headline in the PNJ isn't about some shooting or stabbing in some part of our town.
We need to clean up our own yard before we talk too much about THOSE PEOPLE in some town up North.

I know Chicago is a target because of the POTUS and his ties to that town, but this town's news on murder and assault incidents is more disturbing to me than what's going on in Chicago.
Considering our size,there is no sense in it.


What Democratic politician can we blame for OUR crime rate?

The ones I blame 100% are the judges that let the criminals out on early release so they can do more crimes and the witnesses that refuse to testify.....

Nothing to do with the cowh.... went back and read original post and not one mention of the cowh--not all revolves around him but nice to see the defending when he's not the topic of conversation...this has been happening in Chicago for FAR too long. Seems that every year for the past five or so years there have been these reports from Chicago. Know that Emanuel is a democrat but what difference should that make? It's amazing that with all the deaths the talking point remains...gun control again in a city with some of the toughest gun laws in the nation.

The see nothing witnesses can't really be blamed..their lives are on the line. Aside from the culture of not trusting the residents need to see a police visibility on a regular basis not just when the murders rise. You are correct about the judicial aspect of the problem...who would take a stand against the thugs when they are back on the streets in a matter of hours?

Well, I thought it was SPOT ON!

There are hundreds of posts about Democrat lies and corruption, but very few denigrating posts about Republicans. Saying what does this have to do with politics reminds me of how many times I have read posts on different threads where posts introduce Democrat bashing and the thread had nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans.

Jake, the good old U.S. of A. already leads the world in incarceration and the costs of housing these guys and gals are staggering. (In 2007, around $74 billion was spent on corrections. The total number of inmates in 2007 in federal, state, and local lockups was 2,419,241. That comes to around $30,600 per inmate.)

I don't think we can afford to slap all the criminals into jails for the full term of their sentences. Jails are busting at their seams already.





I don't profess to know what the answer is. You think if we started chopping off hands it would reduce thievery and violent crime? Perhaps more Draconian punishment would be a deterrent, I dunno. Surely, the ACLU would condemn greater punishment methods. Lawyers are part of the problem.

I understand 100% Eric, but they have meals, beds, cable TV, and many other things in prison that lots of law abiding people don't have.. If you asked some of the prisoners in MOST jails and prisons, they would tell you they have it better there than they do outside trying to work to pay the bills, so they turned to crime to survive because it pays a LOT better than a normal job and got caught.. Imagine how many would want to get out if they did away with TV and other luxuries and had to break big rocks into little ones or actually do manual labor ie; mowing the lawn when it's 110 degrees or shovelling snow up north, or growing their own veggies to eat.. I bet Joe Arpeo has a LOT less repeat offenders in his prison than Escambia County does..
IN the USA, many PARENTS or guardians are proud of the kids when they get away with breaking a law, instead of being ashamed of them... In Japan, one of the worst things a child can do is to bring dishonor to the parents.. When I was in Japan, the person in jail had to pay for meals, bedding, medical, and everything else.. If they couldn't pay, the family was billed.. If they didn't pay, the inmate slept on bare concrete and ate a very basic life sustaining diet ie; fish heads and rice with plain water to drink.. That was years ago, so it might be different now, but they still have a lot less crime than we do..

There are hundreds of posts about Democrat lies and corruption, but very few denigrating posts about Republicans.  Saying what does this have to do with politics reminds me of how many times I have read posts on different threads where posts introduce Democrat bashing and the thread had nothing to do with Democrats or Republicans.

As I stated earlier, the lawyers (like the dadgum ACLU) get involved by arguing the Eighth Amendment's "cruel and unusual" punishment... and what appears to be reasonable incarceration to us seems like Draconian punishment to the legal system.

We read stories where an ex-con robs an establishment, then sits down and awaits arrest and conviction, just so he can be put back into prison. You are absolutely right. They have free room, meals, TV, a library, and are pampered better than if they were on the street.

Can a judge even sentence anyone to "hard labor" these days? If enough land is available, they should grow their own food.

I remember taking a patrol-boy reward bus trip to Florida's East Coast, and we stopped for a tour and lunch at the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna. The food was supposedly all grown on the site, including the beef. The beef was tough and unrecognizable and the other stuff served with it was horrible as well. One kid threw up just before getting back onto the bus. The food in prisons should not taste good. It should be healthy and taste horrible. Bad enough to where prisoners don't want to come back.

     OK....Emanuel is a democrat...he's failed as mayor with his response to the crime...does that help the situation in any way?  Don't know what political affiliation the police superintendent is...but once again does it really matter?  This isn't party affiliations it's incompetence in handling a problem that's been around far too long.  Now even democratic supporters of Mayor Emanuel are questioning both the mayor and the superintendent and have made accusations that stats have been 'cooked' in order to cover up the higher violent crime statistics. [Chicago Magazine].  

      Guess you must have missed the discussions about the sleazy former mayor of San Diego that was a republican...don't recall anyone here defending or making excuses for his conduct.  The newly elected republican to the House from Louisiana that was caught on camera making out with one of his staff...Gov Jindal and the GOP have called for him to step down but unfortunately there were no criminal violations and this guy has decided to stick around...thankfully he's just finishing a term and hopefully the residents of Louisiana will kick his butt outta there.

Read the original post and point out any Democrat bashing except for perhaps criticism of Mayor Emanuel. The only other criticism was their solution [statements] that tougher gun control is needed. It was another poster that replied and brought the cowh into the discussion.

Take a look at the threads on this Politics forum and do a comparison on which ones are critical of Democrats and which ones are critical of Republicans.

I rest my case.

Your case is incorrect. Point out once where I've not criticized a republican when they've broken the law or involved in an ethical scandal. Now whether their ego keeps them from doing the correct thing is another question. In the case of the Chicago post there were some that saw politics over the problem...that can't be helped and it's an easy excuse. It's taken several years before the media in Chicago would call out elected officials on this issue. Perhaps injecting politics is a large part of why there has been no solution to the problem.

Of course there is more criticism of the party that's in power that comes with the territory. Just supported a statement/quote from a Democrat!

The sheer number of posts denigrating democrats and the relative scarcity of posts denigrating Republicans are proof enough. There are plenty of buffoons on both side of the fence but one party seems to get the lion's share of attention.

    So once again instead of posting about the topic it's easier to just say...this is unfair?  Read the original post and aside from criticism of Mayor Emanuel....where was there  democrat bashing?. Otter made the accusation and was the only one that had mentioned the cowh....This thread wasn't or intended to be about republican v democrat it was simply about the violence in Chicago and the inability of their elected officials to deal with it...where it became another issue did not come from me.  The editors of papers and magazines in Chicago are making allegations of 'cooking the books' not me.  The Emanuel Administration owns this incompetence and there's no defending their record...well unless it's just picking on democrats.  That must mean so much to the dead innocents and their families.
In this case explain just who should receive the 'lions share' of the blame? When there is an American City that has recorded more casualties than a war zone over different periods....perhaps it's time to hold those elected to deal with the problem accountable.

In this thread, I have two posts about crime in response to others' posts. Perhaps you didn't read them.

The primary reason Dems are taking a beating is the simple fact they hold the reins of power right now. Since they are out front it only stands to reason they should take the heat for failed or failing policies, illegal or improper use of government power (IRS, DOJ, DHS, ACA, etc). It's impossible to dredge up my "denigrating" past comments about Bush II's invasion of Iraq (bad move) or the MANY times I've slammed both parties for their inability to work together and BHOs astounding leadership failures both here and abroad.

No, if the posts seem disproportionately weighted toward negative comments of D's it's because they have the W/H and the Senate - and get the bulk of the press. The House is so useless it hardly merits a comment of any sort - and that includes both R's and D's - as I've often stated.

Y'all are right that the current administration is worthy of much "consideration" of their actions.

I remember the criticisms of the Bush administration, and, at the time, I felt that THEY were the ones getting picked upon... unfairly... and boy, did Olddaze have a field day then, lol.

By the way, I see him on another forum and he hasn't changed his ways.

So, one day we'll be seeing uncomplimentary posts about President Jeb Bush???
