Y'all may not know this, but Hallmarkgrad used to have some high horsepower hot rods. This pic reminded me of him.
(He knew deputies by first name basis... and it wasn't always a friendly exchange.)

What IS that?? I wonder what country that is... that would be about 37 kinds of illegal in the U.S.

Here you go Ricey...
Even though many skeptics claimed it was a Photoshop pic, it was an authentic shot taken during the engine’s trip to Alice Springs in Australia’s Northern Territory. Built by the giant industrial firm MAN Diesel & Turbo, the engine is a 12-cylinder version of its 51/60 dual-fuel architecture. Various models of this cylinder are available, including V18 and an inline-9. Each cylinder is 510mm bore with a 600mm stroke (20.08 x 23.62 inches), giving this particular V12 model a total displacement of 1,470.8 liters, or 89,756 cubic inches. MAN rates the power output of the cylinder at 975 kilowatts, resulting in a total of 11,700 kW for this engine, which equates to 15,690 horsepower. Max operating rpm is 500, so the torque calculates out to around 164,800 lb-ft.
The engine is a 4-stroke diesel that runs on either liquified natural gas or diesel fuel. Fuel is injected via a common rail system that allows flexibility in timing, duration and pressure — which allows it respond quickly to combustion knock signals for each cylinder.
According to a MAN press release, the engine was shipped in 2010 from France to Darwin, Australia, where it boarded the road train. Six days was needed to reach Alice Springs, where the engine is one of three used at an electrical power station.

That's awesome. MAN used to be one of my suppliers at GE & Siemens. I've got to research that... I wonder how much it weighs... 18 axles. I wonder how they transported it through Europe. I'm pretty sure that would not be a legal load in Germany, France... several others.

I meant to say that it would not be a legal way to haul the load, not that the actual load was illegal... although, depending on how much that monster weighs I'm not too sure what the alternative is since you can't break it down.

They probably paid through the nose for a special permit and then paid extensive overtime wages to law enforcement personnel for escorts.
As tall as that rascal was, they probably had linemen taking down power lines, then reinstalling them when the convoy passed.

Yeah, they would've had to have power crews in front of and behind them. I think they must have flown it from Germany to Australia... my MAN foundry was in Frankfurt, and heavy cargo planes have access in and out at the international airport there. I don't know which factory this beast was built at but cannot imagine they'd have a factory with no logistical access.
I still want to know how much it weighs. I found more information on it, but it didn't include weight. I'd guess over 400T, without knowing dimensions.

When Deep South Cranes had a new crane at 5 Flags for assembly and things, it took 19 tractor trailers to bring in the pieces and be within weight limits for the trucks.. They had to have FAA approval to lift the boom up.. The base part of the crane is over 1 million pounds going down the interstate when it goes to different jobs..

yeah, we used Deep South at GE but before I left we had a falling out with them. I really hope they were able to resolve things because for the area they have good equipment, and they do have a good crew. I always liked working with them. If memory serves they have a crane that could be part of an erection crew... I believe that's the one you're referring to, Jake.
Those big mobile cranes only weigh that much because of the ballast, but I'm sure you already knew that.

Just one of the pads for under the feet are 8,000 pounds.. Â The counterweights are 10 tons each and they had 8 of them on the crane when I saw it..

 they're pretty awesome, huh??
Speaking of weights... this is totally off subject, but my '97 Tacoma (4WD extracab) weighs about 500 lbs more than my cousin's 2007 3/4 ton crew cab 4WD. Whuuut are they building Chevys out of these days???

I sent you a few pics of the crane....

I super hope the difference is not in the frame :/. Scary just to think about that.
I dunno about motor being smaller, although it could be lighter materials... I've got a tiny lil ole 2.7 liter 4-cylinder and he has a big ole v8. The body on the Tacoma is surprisingly, err... "sturdy" lol. That could account for a good deal of the weight as well.
I got the crane pictures and showed them to my friend, too. We both enjoyed them. Thanks, Jake.

I watched the video again and got these screencaps. Since it started at the Port of Darwin, I assume they sent it to Australia via ship.
Written on the shipping container...
and another weight mention...

I was in North Pole getting water when I read that and am home now and still surprised at the weight. Not nearly as heavy as I expected it to be... roughly 250 short tons (when are we going to switch to the metric system??).
I was reading the comments on some of the articles about this and it sounds like they use huge gunpowder charges to start up these engines, and the mufflers are about 3 stories tall. :-o
I think I'd still be wearing some mean hearing protextion, thankyouverymuch.
