...describes Acquired Savant Syndrome where injury or disease causes spontaneous artistic ability. It is incredible to see stuff like this happening. The article describes the abilities of several people... the YouTube below is just about Derek Amato.
The article also describes some Alzheimer's patients, whose abilities INCREASE when their disease advances.
Quote :
As the left brain goes dark, the circuits keeping the right brain in check disappear. The skills do not emerge as a result of newly acquired brain power; they emerge because for the first time, the areas of the right brain associated with creativity can operate unchecked.

Amazing, Eric. I have never heard of acquired savant syndrome.
This article brings to mind a movie in which Mel Gibson played a man who developed genius as a result of being struck by lightning. I thought it was just fiction, but I now see it can happen. I can't remember the name of the movie.

I saw that movie, but cannot remember the title.
PB, I don't know why, but your post reminded me of the movie Awakenings with Robert deNiro and Robin Williams... directed by Penny Marshall. If you haven't seen it, it is a tear-jerker. An adaptation of a true story.
