Smoking would be prohibited in public housing homes nationwide under a proposed federal rule announced on Thursday, a move that would affect nearly one million households and open the latest front in the long-running campaign to curb unwanted exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke.
The ban, by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, would also require that common areas and administrative offices on public housing property be smoke-free.
But the restriction on smoking inside dwellings would pose challenges to overburdened public housing agencies, which could face resistance from some residents resentful of losing control of what they can do in their own homes.

| I read this same article in the NYT yesterday pkr, and I have a dilemma with this one.
Even though I detest cigarette smoke I have a serious issue with gov't bans on smoking in privately owned establishments, and I am glad that Alaska allows the business owner to decide for themselves whether they will allow smoking and the individual to then decide whether they will spend their money there. That's the way it should be. On a larger scale I have an issue with the gov't overreach, period.
But this is public housing... Some of these people legitimately don't have a choice where to live, and they're raising kids there... in the 2nd hand smoke.
What do you guys think? | |

| I mostly am just amused. I don't think anything should be legal that harms others... so I certainly think it's a valid policy. But what made me chuckle was the two politically correct positions. It's a taboo to place conditions on FREE SHIT... so I doubt anything will happen before the next election. Did you notice that the last sentence denotes ownership of public housing to the occupant? Lol... this is a strange new world. I swear "enlightenment" has been redefined as the ability to believe the opposite of reality. | |

So lets get this straight...it's not alright to drug test recipients of entitlement money/benefits.... but it's somehow ok to attempt or think about banning the use of something that's still legal?....

| Lol... Yep. It's a conundrum.
Are people free to eat, drink, drug, and smoke themselves to death or not?

| This is just another instance where liberals think they know what's best for their "slaves". And that's what these entitlement folks are in reality, slaves to their food stamps, welfare, and free or subsidized housing. In effect they are slaves to liberals who depend heavily on them to vote for their fellow socialists. | |

| This will certainly test their convictions.
Do you care enough for the wellbeing of your constituents to piss them off before an election?

| Like Ricey, I have a problem with cigarette smoke. In high concentrations, it is nauseating to me.
However, I think it is just another government intrusion into our lives. We're the land of the free... yeah, right!
Folks will step outside to smoke, leaving their young children alone in that apartment... "for just a minute", they will say... when explaining how some tragedy occurred to their unsupervised children.

Well the liberal...socialists...are only attempting to keep their investments around for future elections or then they'll have to resort to Chicago politics where the deceased still vote....And hrc and Bernie believe that the cowh hasn't gone left enough...
