AP, Jul 27, 2015: More than a quarter million sockeye salmon returning from the ocean to spawn are either dead or dying in the Columbia… wiping out at least half of this year’s returning population… [NOAA's Ritchie Graves] says up to 80 percent of the population could ultimately perish.

The lack of rainfall obviously decreased the water volume in the rivers. Record hot temps heat up the diminished water volume to a point where it cannot hold enough oxygen for the salmon to survive.

We have the same thing around here in our bayous in August and September. Menhaden and other fish die by the millions.

Perhaps the sickly fish are more susceptible to pathogenic organisms. (Just a SWAG)

Off the coast, there is a MASSIVE red tide bloom. Toxins from the red tide are pretty concentrated and this could be partially to blame for the devastation as well.
