May 15, 1989, Associated Press: “Using computer models, researchers concluded that global warming would raise average annual temperatures nationwide [USA] two degrees by 2010.”

Climate science is still in its infancy compared to the age of the earth and all of the climate cycles that have happened. I have to agree that all of the chemicals and carbon monoxide being dumped into the atmosphere is a bad thing but it's just one thing. Even if the U.S. jumped to the head of the line and completely eliminated carbon fuels it would have a negligible effect globally when third world cesspools are still burning dirty coal and firewood. Russia is the most polluted country on earth, China has horrible air pollution, and India is just as bad. Those are all countries with large populations that contribute more pollution than the U.S. ever will.

Two words come to mind that deserves maximum investment instead of just hit or miss things like solar and wind that require enormous geographic footprints to contribute much in elimination of carbon:

If you mean private investment to a very large degree... I agree. There's nothing wrong inherently with some govt support subsidy... but the more effective method of innovation is private imo. Back in the 70's Carter threw enormous largesse at shale oil extraction during the gas crisis... but in the end it was private investment that provided the solution. I predict that as oil reserves do begin to decline that the natural evolution will figure out the alternatives... as usual. That will also solve the rise of co2... which hasn't correlated to the warming anyway.

Scientists are serious about climate change. Insurance companies are too. Even the Pope is.

How clouds form and how they help set the temperature of the earth are two of the big remaining questions in climate research. Now, a study of clouds over the world's remotest ocean shows that ocean life is responsible for up to half the cloud droplets that pop in and out of existence during summer.

The study, which appears online July 17 in Science Advances, combines computer modeling with satellite data over the Southern Ocean, the vast sea surrounding Antarctica. It reveals how tiny natural particles given off by marine organisms—airborne droplets and solid particles called aerosols - nearly double cloud droplet numbers in the summer, which boosts the amount of sunlight reflected back to space. And for the first time, this study estimates how much solar energy that equates to over the whole Southern Ocean.

"It is a strong effect," said climate scientist Susannah Burrows at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. "But it makes sense because most of the area down there is ocean, with strong winds that kick up a lot of spray and lots of marine microorganisms producing these particles. And continental aerosol sources are mostly so far away that they only have a limited impact. Really the marine aerosols are running the show there."

There are so many things in this world that act as buffers to counteract extremes... maybe this is one of 'em.

They talk about sea ice melting and, with a lack of a white surface (ice), the earth will warm. Perhaps a heavier cloud layer will offset this with white clouds reflecting the sun back into space.
