Building My First Squidoo Lens Empty
PostSubject: Building My First Squidoo Lens   Building My First Squidoo Lens EmptyMon Oct 08, 2012 11:34 pm

I am building my first Squidoo lens. Here is Squidoo:
http://www.squidoo.com/

My site is going to be an affiliate marketing site that will be tied to my website promoting LED flashlights sold at Amazon.com.

Squidoo is cool, because you can make lenses for free. Squidoo makes its money by hosting Google adsense ads on your page, but it shares half the add revenue with lenscrafters (you give them the email address for your PayPal account--that is how you get paid).

There are two ways to participate in the Amazon affiliate program at Squidoo. You can either use your own affiliate links, or you can use theirs. If you don't have or cannot get an Amazon Associates account, you can use Squidoos amazon account, and they will share half the revenue made through your lenses with you--paid to your paypal account.

I am going to try a few lenses for my affiliate niches, because I will save on web-hosting costs.

Of course, you can build almost any kind of site at Squidoo--it does not have to be sales related.

I will tell you, I am not making a lot of money as an affiliate marketer, but I am having fun with it, for sure. I started getting traction with one of my sites the past two months, and was making small, but steady sales at Amazon--then Google slapped me down for some reason, and my traffic fell off. Got to work on that SEO and hope to crawl back into the earlier-ranked pages.

Building My First Squidoo Lens Empty
PostSubject: Re: Building My First Squidoo Lens   Building My First Squidoo Lens EmptyThu Oct 11, 2012 2:21 pm

I finished and published my first Squidoo Lens this afternoon:

Best Small LED Flashlights

It took 2.5 days of intense work to get the first one done, but any others will be a little easier. I used a proprietary guide that I purchased online, which came with pre-made HTML templates, but you still had to add your own content to the templates and make the HTML work. If the HTML is off by a single space, it can throw the whole thing off. I got frustrated here and there, but eventually figured it out.

Now I have to work on SEO and getting this page ranked by Google. A science that is in its own world.......

I plan on doing more lenses like this one linked to products sold at Amazon.com. Fun, fun, fun---and hopefully, you make a few sales, too. I was making steady small sales from June-September, but October has been dry so far. Got to rethink some of my strategies, and start working on more Squidoo lenses!

Z, a couple of questions...

1. Why do they call web pages "lenses"?

2. Off the top of your head, where should I look for LED bulbs for my fixtures on either side of the garage door. They use standard sockets for 60-watt bulbs, not floods. They keep burning out... even Compact Florescents.

Good questions, Eric. I think Squidoo differentiates its "Lenses" from regular webpages, because a lens has every trait of a web page, but you don't have separate web hosting. I did not pay for any web hosting to make that page, and in fact, I will be paid for having it (Squidoo makes its money from hosting Google adsense ads on member's lenses, and shares half the revenue with the lenscrafter). I am definitely going to make more Squidoo lenses connected to my Amazon Associate's account; especially if I can get traffic from this first lens.

Now, about your quest for LED bulbs. For 60-watt incandescent bulbs I use 7-watt LED bulbs. Most manufacturers claim their 6 and 7 watt LED bulbs are meant to replace 40-watt incandescent bulbs; however, I have found that 7-watt LED bulbs shine much brighter than 40-watt incandescents, and are perfectly acceptable to use as 60-watt incandescent replacements.

Now, where to get them.... I bought most of my LED bulbs from online sources, with some also purchased at Home Depot when I could find a good deal. Amazon.com now has a whole slew of 6 and 7-watt LED bulbs in the price range of $8-$10, which is a very good price in 2012. And, if you buy $25 worth from Amazon, you will get free super-saver shipping.

You can search for these yourself at Amazon, or you can visit my LED Lightbulb Reviews website, where I list and review every LED bulb Amazon sells for $10.00 or under. I also review other LED bulbs as well. You need to look for bulbs with A19 form (standard light bulb shape) and either an E26 or E27 base (standard screwbase) and you are there.

I must warn you though, if you visit my website and click through to Amazon, a cookie will be placed on your computer and anything you purchase there over the next 24 hours, I will get a 4% commission on...... (that is how affiliate marketing works). If you don't want the cookie, just link to the product from outside my website....

Eric, I was at the Holme Depot website this morning, and I saw that they have EcoSmart 8-Watt (430 lumen) LED bulbs on sale for $9.97 apiece. That is an excellent price, and I plan on picking up a few this weekend....

PostSubject: Re: Building My First Squidoo Lens   Building My First Squidoo Lens EmptySun Nov 18, 2012 8:26 pm

Someone from this site visited my Best Small LED Flashlights Squidoo Lens today...... Thank you. I actually made my first sales from this site as Hurricane Sandy bore down on New England a couple of weeks ago. Someone bought three LED headlamps and then went off and bought a camp stove and some other "survival" items. I got commissions on all of this stuff, because if someone clicks through to Amazon via my affiliate links, I get commissions from whatever they buy.

Since making this first Squidoo Lens, I have created three other lenses pushing various products from Amazon.com. So, I now have four Wordpress websites and these four lenses.

I am not making tons of money as an affiliate marketer--it is more of a hobby. The challenge now is getting my sites better ranked by Google. Good on-page SEO and quality backlinks to your sites are key. I have greatly improved my SEO, and am working on the backlinks.

Thanks for sharing this, Z! You've built a good site, AND you've given me a marvelous idea.

I had never heard of Squidoo before!

Z - if you want to learn about HTML in more depth, I recommend the Nutshell series by Lusciano and Kennedy. They are technical but easy to understand. The authors even wax into humor from time to time.

Back when I was learning HTML in '98 or so, I was having a heck of a time until I picked up this book on a whim at BooksAMillion:

HTML: The Definitive Guide
, by Lusciano and Kennedy

It's well worth the investment if you are going to start building more sites that require HTML knowledge.

Squidoo is free, too, PB. You don't have to pay for any web-hosting. They have a big relationship with Amazon.com, too. You can advertise Amazon products two ways. You can use you own Amazon Associates account, or you can use Squidoo's. If you do not have or cannot get an Amazon Associates account, they will partner with you using Squidoo's associates account. You then set up your Squidoo lens pushing whatever Amazon products you want (your "niche"); however, instead of using your own affiliate links, you use Squidoo's affiliate links, and Squidoo will share 50% of the revenue with you. Squidoo also runs ads on your lenses, and shares a portion of the add revenue with lens-crafters.

Thanks for your comments on my site. It looks nice because I used a proprietary template created by Erica Stone--she is pretty big in the affiliate marketing world. I bought a copy of the template and used it on all four of my lenses.

Now I just need to get traffic..... My best website as far as traffic was concerned is this one:

Best Paper Shredder Reviews

It is a WordPress site I created last April, and by June, I started accumulating small sales at Amazon.com. Traffic grew steadily from June-September, with the site garnering over a hundred clicks to Amazon.com each month after July. Then, in October, my traffic that site stalled. My only answer to that is I did something to piss-off Google, and my page-rankings got penalized. Likely some of the backlinks I created did this. You have to be very careful in your attempts to trick Google into liking your site, and if you make too many of the wrong kinds of backlinks, you can be toast. Thankfully, my traffic and clicks may be a bit on the mend-I sold two shredders the other day, and I had 5 clicks from that site (from yesterday) when I checked my Amazon associates account today.

My brain was swirling after I read your first paragraph, Z. My what can do what for my what?

I took an online course for internet marketers a few years ago when I had my online seed business on EBay. I never finished the course, much to my chagrin. Perhaps if I had, I would understand what you are writing about.

I can look at Amazon through a Squidoo lens....yup, that's it. Got it now. All set to go!

lol!

Building My First Squidoo Lens Empty
PostSubject: Re: Building My First Squidoo Lens   Building My First Squidoo Lens EmptyWed Nov 28, 2012 1:15 pm

I first learned about affiliate marketing in September of 2011 PB, when I wrote a report on it for a client under my writing gig at Fiverr.com. Then, this guy from Australia ordered a gig and wantged me to write a report about ceiling fans. He really liked my report, and kept on coming back for more reports about different aspects of ceiling fans. He then told me he was an Amazon Associate and he was taking my reports and using them for content on his website pushing ceiling fans sold at Amazon.com. I befriended this guy (Peter), and he helped me start my own affiliate marketing website. In late 2011 and early 2012, I did a lot of writing and product-researching for Peter on scads of susequent Fiverr gigs that he ordered. I told him as I did this stuff for him, I was learning how to do it for me.

I now have 8 websites (four WordPress sites and four Squidoo lenses). I have learned a lot, and am still learning. Though some people claim to make 6-figure incomes in affiliate marketing, I make just a few dollars a month, and have made money off just two of the 8 sites thus far.

Right now I am working on a traffic building strategy. There is a two-tier strategy for this. One is optimizing your web pages for search engines-which I have probably 80% done already. The second is promoting your sites and building back-links (i.e., dropping your URL at places like Twitter, etc., and putting it out there so others will see your site and perhaps bookmark it on their blog, etc.). You have to be very careful with your backlinking, because Google frowns on gaming their search-algorithms and will readily penalize you. That is called a "Google Slap." For some reason, my paper shredder site got slapped in October and my traffic dropped off. I think it may be finally coming back some, as I sold another shredder yesterday.

It is a hobby to do this, but if I could ever turn it into a money-maker, I would go at it full-force. Very Happy
