Is Just doing their Jobs...a good enough answer ?

Perhaps it is time for soldiers and cops who are Christians, libertarians, have moral scruples, want a clean conscience, have respect for individual liberty and private property, or want a free society to get another job. After all, you can’t have a war without soldiers, and you can’t have a police state without police.

This is probably why many soldiers don't reenlist. This is the appropriate time to quit.

It is difficult to just quit in the middle of a deployment. You made a commitment to your country and your squad needs you. And disciplinary procedures can get ugly.

Finding a different job isn't easy and having a dishonorable discharge on your record makes it much more difficult.

I understand the gist of the article. "Guards at concentration camps were just doing their jobs." But would they have been executed for refusing to do those jobs? Perhaps. I doubt that simple guards in wartime had much of a choice.

I read most of the piece but feel that the author ignored the 800-lb. gorilla in the room. Yes, soldiers, policemen, and lowly government types that viciously wield authority with impunity should rightly be admonished. But the majority of the soldiers and civil servants are not monsters.

It is the higher-ups... the decision-makers... the people in authority that turn a blind eye to atrocities, the people that order the atrocities... these are the real monsters.

A gun has no conscience no ability to reason, a man does. You can not say men are just tools in the hands of the vicious.

Sure I can.

I just said it... and it worked.

Then the men in the hands of the monsters are reduced to just tools or soulless brutes, can't be both innocent and guilty.

Sometimes you do what you gotta do.

War is hell.

Can't sugar coat that.

We are all sinners.

That doesn't mean it is okay to do a "My Lai".
