Death Notice question Empty
PostSubject: Death Notice question   Death Notice question EmptyMon Sep 17, 2012 7:13 pm

Is there a legal reason why some death notices are not published in the PNJ? I have been watching for a notice/obituary for the teenager who was killed on Mobile Highway. I know some of the family and would like to express my condolences if that is published.

I'm assuming that there is perhaps an ongoing death investigation in that incident. But in another recent death, a friend of my daughter committed suicide and there was no death notice or obituary for him. I though all deaths had to be published. Is that not correct?

If I knew, Birdie, I would say something.

The death notices, if required by law, are probably published in some obscure newspaper, like the Escambia Sun Press. That is how you can get away with publishing legal notices that nobody will see. The price may be more reasonable as well, I dunno.

I was not aware that there was any legality to whether or not a death notice is published or not. I know in Oklahoma if the family request it there will be no death noticed posted. If the want a more elaborate notice, then they must pay for it and if they do want just the standard notice it does not cost.

Eric, that looks like TMI with regards to the Howard child. I don't need a death certificate, just would like funeral home information. I'm checking the PNJ notices every day as I did when the young man died.

I am also checking this site, where I have found obituaries that were not posted in the News Journal. My mom always loves it when Ifind an obituary for one of her relatives or old high school friends from Washington or Holmes County.

http://funeral.com/death-notices/

Funny, my mom used to make fun of my grandmother for her morbid interest in the obituaries and in attending funerals. Now that my mom is that same age, she has the same interest in other people's deaths.

I go to the PNJ obits every day. Occasionally, I'll see an old friend or an aquaintance there. The death notices have more people listed. I guess that some folks just don't want to pay the PNJ to publish an obit. The death notices are not paid for like the obits. I guess it is an unfunded PNJ service.
