| I read on the internet (so it MUST be true) about the original denim blue jeans were made for miners during the California Gold Rush and were not intended to be washed. Ewww. (After 2 wearings, the current jeans get clammy) | |

| Oh, by all means!
Unless I've worked hard in them, I wear my levis (aka jeans, whatever) two or three times. | |

| Even back in my younger days, you had to wash your Levis at least 3 times. If not they would turn you legs blue. All button fly, no zippers. Buying Levis was a art because you had to figure your size after they shrank. Most of the time they shrank may be one size, but you could buy them in any size 31,32,33 etc. Here in the south you bought your Levis at the start of winter so you could have them "broke in" by summer. Sears or Pennys downtown was the go to place for work clothes.

| My granny owned the only department store in town for about 40-years, so we were always outfitted in 501s, even after they were no longer the popular thing to wear. I could never fit into my sisters' clothes and/or did not like their clothes after they got older, and always received hand-me-downs from my brother. He's not a big guy, so we shared a lot of clothes, too. My cousins (from two of my uncles) and the kids in my family always wore what I call "The Uniform," which was the same darn thing year in and year out: original, button-fly 501s, the same pattern red plaid flannel Woolrich shirts (random t-shirts in Summer if it was hot), and the same style Redwing lace-up boots. To top it off we traveled all-together in a pack roaming the streets of "T-Town," so we must have looked like a little gang. lol. Anyhow, my Granny and my Dad have both told me that when they were young it was "the thing" to never wash your 501s, and Dad recalls wearing them "until they stood up on their own." Oh, and of course they cuffed them at the bottom as well. After Granny finally sold the store (in the nick of time before being put out of business by KMart coming into town... the buyers were put out of business within a year, sadly), for years I went to Sears or Penney's to buy original, button-fly 501s. Now you can't even find them for all the weirdo, malarkey styles they have. Last time I found anything resembling a pair of the originals, it was at a Penney's where I was living in Kansas and they cost EIGHTY-FIVE DOLLARS. I asked the sales gal about it because I thought surely it was a mistake. She said that no, it was no mistake, they were "Red Label." Color me confused... I had to go home and Google Red Label Levis. I ain't payin' no 85 bucks for a damned pair of Levis. Duck, double knee Carhartts yeah, but not regular everyday Levis. | |
