I have many differing types of citus in large pots. I have to pot them for a few years up here in the north end and then harden them off so that they can eventually go into the ground. I also have to research and get only the most cold hardy cultivars of the type.

Here are some Owari Satsuma that I have potted in a special citrus soil blend that I have found they thrive in. 5-1-1 mix

So, what varieties do you thing would thrive a mile off the Gulf near Perdido Bay? Are the grafted varieties preferred?

A dear friend of mine gave me a tiny little Satsuma seedling about two inches tall. I kept it inside with me all winter, yet somehow managed to kill it. So no, I am no good with citrus, although several of our neighbors have Satsuma and grapefruit trees in their yards that are bearing right now.

TRex, are you a master gardener? I am so impressed with what you are doing. How did you get into gardening?

Eric, you are in the ideal environment that close to the gulf to grow citrus. i would simply plant them in hole that has been amended with Pine fines, Peat and Soil conditioner product. Fertilize them at more than the rate required and more often because of the tendency of the nutrients to leach out fairly quick. Almost all citrus that you buy now is grafted onto a rootstock plant with trifoliatta rootstock being the most widely used. I prefer to use Swingle rootstock here in the northern / central part of the county because of its adding cold tolerance to the grafted tree. On that subject I have about 30 8 inch tall meyer trees that I grew from seed to use as grafting stock. Only a few of the citrus varietys will come up true from seed with meyer being one of them. I am not a master gardener PB although I have looked into the class at the extention service and plan to take it with my wife at some point. I just love messin with my plants and I am a researchaholic on some subjects within the whole gardening realm.

The only thing I know about citrus is that I have a grapefruit, an orange and a lemon tree in my back yard. This year all 3 produced more fruit that I could use, so I was giving it away. I put a sign out front and told people they were free fro the asking.

Not really, that would be my wife. She done all the caretaking, fertilizing, pruning etc etc I just enjoyed the fruits of her labor(pun intended).
