Here are some handy tools that can be used here. The "help" button (the blue circle with a question mark) has a more complete list of tools and maybe even a better description of how to do things, but here are a few examples:

To get code to display without the system executing it, in the past, I just made pictures of the text. That was kinda stupid because there is a toolbar icon for "code"... it looks like less-than and greater-than symbols over a page. Put the code you want to display, between the word "code" in brackets (the last one with a /code).

This one is hard to describe, but, using the "code" function here's an example of what I use to post an animated GIF.

Code:
[img]paste the URL of the animated GIF here[/img]

To see what the code looks like, just hit the "quote" button and it will display.

If you want to put something inside a box, (like a quote from an article), paste your text between quote brackets like this:

Code:
[quote]paste your quoted text here[/quote]

This is what a quote box will look like:

Quote :
paste your quoted text here

This "quote" button is on the toolbar and looks like two cartoon talk boxes.

Let's say you are making a post with several points in it and you want to separate them in your post. Enter this code where you want the line to appear. This is called the "Horizontal Rule" hence, "hr" between brackets. Don't leave a space between the code and the following text because the code inserts a carriage return.

Code:
[hr]

It will look something like this...

Talking point #1

Talking point #2

(To see what the code looks like, just hit the "quote" button and it will display.)

There are a lot more codes, but the toolbars have icons representing functions that are easy to guess... like bolding, italics, underlining, etc

To get text to scroll horizontally (which is annoying to me) but you can access this function through the "Others" button, then "Horizontal Scroll" or just use the code as shown below.

Code:
[scroll]Insert your scrolling text here[/scroll]

It will look like this:

Insert your scrolling text here

To scroll your text vertically, there is a function under the "Others" button for vertical scrolling. The code should look like this for it to work

Code:
[updown]Place your scrolling text here[/updown]

Here's what it will look like:

Place your scrolling text here

I taught myself HTML back in '97-'98 before web pages were made using WYSIWIG. I even built some websites.

I LOVED it! It was fascinating to be able to change the color on a screen just by changing the numbers. I was so totally immersed in it that I can remember coding my thoughts as I was drifting off to sleep.....you know, during that period right before you start dreaming. Smile

The best books I found about HTML are the books written by Musciano and Kennedy:

HTML: The Definitive Guide, and HTML: The Definitive Guide, Second Edition.

Now, I want to learn about cascading style sheets. First I'll have to brush up my HTML skills.

I just found another book in the O'Reilly series (same as the Musciano/Kennedy books) that teaches CSS. It's called (of course) CSS: The Definitive Guide.

Also, the Musciano/Kennedy book on HTML now has a third edition that supposedly goes into more detail re: CSS than is provided in their first two books. I may have to pick that one up at BooksAMillion next time I'm there.

I don't know if I told you guys about the Christmas present I bought for myself. It's a book called "Ethical Hacker Certification." I went in looking for some Nutshell series books (Musciano and Kennedy, and so on), and wound up with a book about hacking. Figures. I could have sworn the check-out gal looked at me kinda funny. Very Happy

The introduction to the book suggested I take a course on networking. I signed up for an excellent and free online course through the University of Washington (I think), but I couldn't complete it due to work constraints. Bummer. I'll probably enroll for the next one.

I'm off work for a bit, so I'll finally have time to delve into that book. I had no clue there was such a designation as an "ethical hacker"! I don't plan to pursue certification, of course, but the sheer amount of info and resources contained in that book is incredible.

EDIT: Eric.....ya reckon I'll finally learn how to post a Youtube video? Laughing

Another poster had a good suggestion that works better for me. If you see a YouTube video, make note of it's exact title, then using the YouTube search... search for that video. From the results of the search, right-click on the video link and Copy Link Location.

Then click on the filmstrip icon here in the forum and paste that link location into the popup window and hit OK. That link should work. (hint: if you ever see https in a link and if it doesn't work, try removing the letter s.)

Eric I found even an easier way to post a youtube video. Once you locate the video you want to post, look just below the video and you will see "Share" Click on it to expand it and you will then see "embed". Click on "embed" and the code will appear. Just copy the code within the box and paste it to the thread that you want to display it in.

Good deal. I'm a lazy guy and always want to learn easier ways to do things. I saw that "share" button, but it makes me think of Facebook and I stay away from Facebook like it is the plague. Maybe once a month, I'll go there and catch up a little bit.

BTW, I had a thread about that song a while back. Did you read it? I used to think the song was about the Kent State shooting, but it was about teens wanting to loiter on the Sunset Strip near a certain coffee shop. The city council passed a 10 pm curfew and thousands of kids disobeyed it and tons of cops in riot gear were present, with sirens wailing and bull horns blaring saying they were going to be arrested. I guess some people were arrested, but it wasn't the riot that coulda been.

Yes if I recall correctly, it basically started with the closing of Pandora's Box on Sunset Strip and then just escalated from there

All you have to do once you click the "Share" tab @YouTube is click CTRL-C, as the link you need to upload will already be selected. The Facebook, Google+ &c stuff you see below..., nothing's going to happen with them unless you click on them.

You sound like me with Facebook. If you run either Firefox or Chrome as your browser I very highly recommend the following add-ons:

  • Ad-Bye For Facebook (Say goodbye to FB ads!)

  • Facebook Phishing Protector (must-have)

  • Facebook Blocker (Disables auto-submitting your data to Facebook. Does not block the application)

  • FacebookBlocker (Block FB content from appearing on other websites)

  • Redirect Remover

  • TrackMeNot (Protects privacy in web-search by issuing randomized queries to popular search-engines. Customizable)

  • WOT (Web Of Trust... Green = website is good, Yellow = it's sketchy but use at your own risk, Red = You need to get the hell off that page, pronto)

  • Dr.Web Anti-Virus Link Checker

I have quite a few others, but these are the ones without which I would not ever log onto Facebook... particularly the top two.

Rice, your list above looks like a tiny portion of the volumes of sites that are listed in my new book about white hat hacking.

I checked out a few of the white hat hacker sites he suggested, and wow....I was afraid my computer was going to blow up or a drone would fly in my window and poop on my head. SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE!!!!! Rice, you would T-totally love this book. If you already know bunches about networking, you might not even need a networking class first.

I've only put one of the white hat sites to good use so far - that is ExploitShield. I'll just have to say I was stunned at some of the sites that showed up as attempting to exploit my personal information. And no, our discussion forums are not included.

I run DoNotTrackMe, formerly DoNotTrack+ on Firefox. It says that Google Adsense is trying to track us on this forum. I have it blocked.

EE, I use TrackMeNot and Ghostery which accomplishes the same thing as DoNotTrackMe, just by way of a different method... TrackMeNot is pretty neat, actually.

PB, I know *nothing* about networking Shocked but I'd bet I would enjoy that book you're reading! And Az would too!!

OK, I had to go grab the book. The name of it is "All In One: Certified Ethical Hacker Exam Guide", and it's written by Matt Walker. The copyright is 2012.
