PostSubject: I finally adopted a new kitty today!   I finally adopted a new kitty today! EmptyFri Dec 28, 2012 5:31 pm

After several months of looking on the local humane society website, and being rejected by one couple because I told them what happened to my kitty and the husband was afraid the same might happen to the kitty I wanted to adopt, I finally went in to the humane society today to look at kitties and adopted a real sweetheart!

Her given name is "Sapphire" which I am not terribly fond of, so I've been calling her Blue Kitty, but am considering Zafiro Gatito, which is Blue Kitty in Spanish. She's only been home for less than an hour and is already becoming well adjusted, climbing and cuddling me all over, sitting on my tummy while I try to type and trying to sit on the laptop keyboard... just like Kitty. lol.

She is about 9-months old, fully vaccinated for everything including rabies, spayed and has a microchip (!!). I was surprised to learn that there was a $65 adoption fee, but I'd been under the mistaken impression that the humane society had grants to fund all of the above expenses. So, $65 is completely reasonable with that in mind, not to mention the wonderful work that they do to save animals from kill shelters, which is from where Sapphire was saved in October.

She needs a good brushing but I can't find my kitty brush, and she is still a little squirrelly getting comfortable in her new home, so I had to hold her between my knees to take a picture of her for you all (took several tries to get an acceptable shot!):

-[p;- (<-- that's Blue Kitty saying hello!)

I knooooowwww! Aren't they gorgeous?? And you can't tell in this picture because she was being such a wiggle-worm and I had to trap her between my legs to take the picture, but her coat is the most amazing shade of blue-grey. She really is a very pretty kitty and I can hardly believe how similar her little personality is to my sweet Kitty's. Just uncanny.

She is such a little lover and snuggler. Exactly what I needed and wanted. She calmed down right after I made the original post and has been lying on my chest purring loudly while I type. Whenever she hears a bird she climbs up and perches herself on my shoulder to look out the window to see what in the world is going on outside. Already looks like she might want to be a hunter. First thing she did was sit in a few of the windows checking out the couple of quail and some other birds that were out in the snow. Of course I'll encourage that. Need all the gophers killed around here as I can get.

**I don't know why I wrote in the original post that the Spanish translation was Blue Kitty. I meant to write that it is Sapphire Kitty.

I took two years of Spanish but, Good Lord, that was 45 years ago! You snuck it right past me. We always find a Mexican Restaurant wherever we live and I know enough Spanish to say "Hola" (hello), "Como Esta" (how ya doin?), and Sopa de Pollo (chicken soup).

Well, maybe I remember more, but I don't try to embarrass myself at a restaurant.

My son Nicholas took Spanish every school term from 5th grade until his Junior year in college. He got a minor in Spanish (major in Civil Engineering). Now, he can speak Spanish... "un poco" (a little) he modestly says.

I'd bet you could order a beer, "cerveza, por favor" too from what I've heard about you, EE! lol. I took five years, but if you don't use it you lose it, so I can read it far better than I can speak it.

Beautiful kitty, Riceme!

Speaking of brushing, there is a brush I highly recommend. It's a little expensive but it gets 10 times more hair than the other brushes I've used on my cats. I was totally surprised the first time I used it on my Japanese kitty when I ended up with a mound of hair the size of a tennis ball. And then her hairballs stopped!! Which is great for kitty but also great that I no longer hear her hacking them up. For some reason when she had a hairball she ran straight to the rug in the dining room to hack it up.....I don't know why she prefers puking on my rug rather than the tile floor???? Anyway, here it is and they have them in several sizes and for cats and dogs and for long hair and short hair. Well worth the investment if your pet sheds.

Thank you, Neko! As she has gotten comfortable here and with me, she has become quite the little shit! She plays VERY rough (my hands and arms are constantly scratched and bleeding), gets into EVERYTHING, jumps off the *railing* above the loft (Crow's Nest, 2nd story level) onto my beautiful brown leather couch below, the bamboo floor or onto ME (OUCH!), she is clumsy and knocks everything over, ... ugh!... the list goes on.

I do love her of course, but VERY MUCH HOPE that this is just part of the kitten-phase which she will soon grow out of. Az reminded and cautioned me that Blue sounds exactly like one of her kitties who never grew out of it. Shocked Hopefully it will subside some when good weather comes and I am able to let her out of the house to run wild during daylight hours... get some of that ENERGY out!!

I got a kitty brush, but she will hardly hold still to let me brush her. Fortunately, she's a short - medium hair and doesn't shed much at all. I'm trying to train her to (among other things!) enjoy being brushed, like Kitty did. If I can get her to that point and she does start shedding more, I'll likely buy one of the brush / combs you linked to. Thank you for the great information, Neko.

If the kitty learns she can climb curtains or scratch that couch, it will be a hard habit to break. I used to keep a squirt gun handy. It is a pretty good learning tool. Twisted Evil

Agreed, and I do keep a squirt-gun handy but she seems impervious to it.

Gratefully, there are no curtains in this house because no one can see in from anywhere and no one ever comes near my home... major bonus of living on 1-1/2 acres out in the boonies!

She does not technically "scratch" the couch, but when she's playing rough her claws inevitably do scratch it, which really ticks me off. In many regards I am like Bob's sister-twin in that I am a cheapskate, but there are some things that I regard as long-term investments, and furniture is one of them.

Hi, PkB! So glad you chose to take me up on the invite and join us over here where we speak to each other with respect and civility! cheers

Thank you. She is certainly a beautiful little kitty, but I would not currently characterize her as being "nice." lol.

Naughty cat

Pretty Cat.

I'm pet-less and have been for over a year and I love it. I do get to baby sit my kids dogs (doberman, shiba inu, golden retriever) and that is enough.

I knew one couple that always kept sheets or some kind of covers on their furniture. None of the covers matched and Christine and I would always have a laugh about it when we left their place.

Bob may be a cheapskate but he's not that cheap.
