Former House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday there is currently no Republican Party, but rather a “Trump Party.”
The Ohio Republican made the comment during an appearance at the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island, Mich.
“There is no Republican Party. There’s a Trump party,” Boehner said. “The Republican Party is kind of taking a nap somewhere.”
Boehner resigned from Congress in 2015 amid a looming coup from conservatives in the House to oust him from the speakership.
In April, he joined the board of advisers at Acreage Holdings, one of the country’s largest cannabis corporations.
During his appearance at the Mackinac Policy Conference, Boehner reflected on the results of the 2016 presidential election and said the “two most surprised people in the entire world” the night of the election were Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
“I think Donald Trump promised Melania he would not win. She would never have to worry about living in the White House. It’s probably why she doesn’t look real happy every day — well, maybe one reason,” Boehner joked.
The former House speaker said he knows Trump well and would hear from the former businessman during his tenure as speaker when he was “having a rough week.” Boehner, though, said he “never quite saw” Trump as president.
“Elections are won or lost not based on what the polls say,” he said. “They’re won or lost based on who shows up to vote, and Trump’s people showed up and Hillary’s didn’t.”
Still, Boehner said that once you “peel away the noise and the tweets,” Trump is doing “really good things” from the standpoint of the GOP.
