On a peripheral subject... they do test a lot of cars up here. They call it the Arctic Test Track, but there is not actually any "track" to speak of. They just drive the shit out of prototype cars up the Dalton Hwy, which is the haul road that terminates at Prudhoe Bay. The Dalton begins at the Elliott Hwy, the beginning of which is 2 miles from my house, so at some point I get to see all these prototypes, which they cover in what I call "windbreakers" so no one can see them. It's like a car cover with a bunch of masking tape stripes all over it. It is very strange to see cars driving around with covers on them. It's distracting for sure, and in bad road and weather conditions, I'm surprised they let them do it at all. Anyways, my buddy that drives the haul road says that the prototypes are always in the ditch. Laughing

Having made the trek from Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle in a tour mini-bus [truly an ALL day event]....if there are vehicles that can make it there...anyplace else should be much easier.....Beautiful scenery and glad I did it once but if there should be another return trip and that venture would be suggested...I'd pass....

I have actually not gone up yet but my friend and I want to take her son this summer. I understand that the drive can be harrowing and is not for the faint of heart... narrow gravel road, potholes as big as Volkswagen Beetles, fuel trucks barreling directly at you going 70 mi/hr...

On one hand, it sounds exactly like the access road to the mine. On the other hand, the access road is only 16 miles long. It's 200 miles one way to the Arctic Circle. Shocked

My buddy who escorts on the haul road says that people end up in the ditch because they see trucks coming straight at them and they instinctively swerve, whereas you *should* keep driving straight toward them until right before you collide, then both parties take their respective sides of the road, leaving mere inches between the vehicles. pale
