PostSubject: Sen Chuck Schumer.....   Mon Feb 15, 2016 11:20 am

2007--The Senate should block all SCOTUS nominations for 18 months...

2016--Calls on the Senate for a swift nomination/confirmation process
to fill vacancy on the SCOTUS...[Name] cowh has 10.5 months in office

So...what's the difference in Sen Schumer's and other democrats argument now as opposed to another time?...Could it be the political party that occupied/occupy the White House?...

1988- Mitch McConnell voted to confirm a SCOTUS nomination during the last months of the Reagan Presidency.
2016 - The Senate should block any SCOTUS nomination until a new president is sworn in.

Okay. I'll copy what you said:
What's the difference in Mitch McConnells and other Republicans behavior now as opposed to another time?  Could it be the political party that occupied/occupy the White House?

I'd like to also add that the term "lame duck president" does not apply to any POTUS until after the election prior to his leaving the White House. It shows total  ignorance when the Republicans call him that and when the news media repeats the term.  Obama is not a lame duck president. Americans elected him for 4 years and not three.

It's not the end of the world. The SCOTUS can still operate, although the votes could swing different ways until we get an odd number of justices. It's all political... always has and always will.

This SCOTUS situation is going to get interesting... perhaps more interesting than POTUS election.

That was the point....but to watch Sen Schumer and Reid suddenly be 'outraged' that the Senate may not take up any nominations and/or confirm was laughable...Apparently Chuckie needed to be reminded of his own words and opinions....

The cowh should nominate as he is mandated to do.....the Senate should fulfill it's obligations and table the nominations or vote to disapprove the nominee....Geez....this isn't the first nor will it be the last time that this has/or will be done and yup it probably stinks depending on which side of the fence you're on....There is a reason a term was started and used.....the nominee was 'borked'....and this time democrats aren't finding the process easy to follow...but if the shoe were on the other foot.....

"table the nomination," do you really think that's the duty of the US Senate? They're being paid out of our tax money. They have jobs to do. It is the duty of the Senate to say yea or nay. It is non-performance of their duty to "table" a nomination.

The Senate Republicans will show their lack of guts if they table Obama's nominations. They should do their duty, their constitutional duty, and advise or consent.
Then let the US people vote in November and see what we think of their vote. I promise you that if they fail to do their jobs, the American people won't see it as a brave political act.
There is no precedent to refuse to confirm a nominee during the last year of a presidency. 12 nominees have been voted on in the last year of a presidency. Republicans are lying when they say there's some unwritten law that says different.
At least all of them agree that all the rest of them are liars. That's what I heard Saturday night in the debate. It was the most open and honest debate I've ever watched. Everybody just said everybody else was a liar. I agree wholeheartedly.

It's real easy....it states the potus shall nominate and the Senate will take that nomination under advisement for confirmation....Time to come down off the high horse and quit acting like the democrats are somehow not capable of doing exactly the same thing....were their actions also a 'lack of guts'?....Again just happens because of which side of the fence that you're on....However, do agree that the republicans will be gutless in the matter and will cave....and that will probably end in a filibuster....For once I would like to see the fools call the cowh's bluff of shutting down the government...

I don't think the POTUS has threatened to shut down the government. He hasn't made any such bluff.
That's a Republican idea, not a Democratic idea.

It's also a stupid idea politically. But if the Republicans want to do it, I'd be okay with it if they refused their paychecks and got rid of their medical care while the government was closed down. No lobbyist money, no campaign contributions, no perks of being a Senator at all while the Senate doors are locked.

Otherwise it's just a bunch of welfare cheats collecting the taxpayers money and refusing to work.

WHAT?????.....That's the first go to line of defense---shut the government down!...To quote President Ronald Reagan...."There you go again"......Always the 'evil' 'obstructing' republicans....Because we all know that there are no rich democrats...or democrats that play political games....The tired and lame blame only one side is the reason we are in the mess that we are...now because of the lack of logic the country has Donald Trump and Bernie sanders as even being considered credible candidates---why?....Because people are fed up with the corruption that is Washington DC....It's not just one side or the other...it is and has been both sides for decades and partisanship and voter apathy have allowed this to happen and continue....

I wish we could play with one set of rules and standards.

We could play with one set of rules and standards if it was the Constitution.
It is the duty of the POTUS to nominate and the duty of the Senate to advise and consent.

There's no provision in the Constitution that says that Ronald Reagan got to be president for 4 years after he was elected but Barack Obama only gets 3/5ths of that time because he is Black.

If the Senate does not consider a nominee after Obama chooses one, up to and including every day they intentionally delay they will be derelict in doing their Constitutional duty.

They will consider the nominee. It was a political ploy to try to make sure obama didn't nominate a leftist activist... like holder as ag. I'll save you the teeth gnashing tho... only a recognized moderate with no controversy will be approved.

Not unless mediawatcher is a liberal. He claimed the POTUS has threatened it. About 5 posts above yours he said ".For once I would like to see the fools call the cowh's bluff of shutting down the government..."

But you are right, nobody has said it. Not the POTUS nor the Senate.

Ask him don't ask the libertard.

Sen Schumer said in an interview that he and the cowh had spoken and shutting down the governemnt is an option...then added 'we' don't want to go down that road but if the obstructing persists it's an option....Think it was a cnbc interview...Just by mentioning a shutdown is a poker move like blocking the nomination talk...as 'pkrbum' mentioned it's a chess game with the scotus nominee as a political pawn...now which side will blink...
No 'hyperventalating' here....pay the miltary, elderly's social security, disability payments etc., and shut it down...it would be a fitting way for the cowh to ride into the sunset....

Neither Barack Obama nor Chuck Shumer threatened to shut down the government. Read the article. Shumer said the far right Republicans may threaten to shut it down if they don't get the amendments to the budget bill they want.

It's obvious they might do that because they've done it before.

Schumer mentioned it as an 'option' again probably as strategy to move the process along to avoid a bogged down stalemate of the nomination...Last checked Schumer and the cowh are democrats and the republican leadership(?) and candidates responded to the question of a threat of a government shutdown....not really all that difficult to understand....
