PostSubject: Limits on use of dispersants   Sat Feb 13, 2016 5:41 pm

This was in today's paper and it made me wonder if anyone on the Gulf of Mexico has limited the use of dispersants. It would strike me as odd if we were ahead of the game on pretty much anything. We're normally about 50 years behind the curve.

Alaska adopts new rules for dispersant use in oil spills

After BP used millions of gallons of Corexit, dispersants are not favorably looked upon. The Corexit was probably worse than the oil spilled from the Deepwater Horizon rig.

My marina manager got after me when I used a little Dawn on a diesel spill. He said he could get into big trouble.

Yeah, that's why I asked... I just googled it and I'm surprised that there doesn't seem to be any restriction whatsoever on any dispersants, let alone Corexit, in the Gulf of Mexico.

I thought Dawn was what was used to try to clean up the wildlife after oil spills... at any rate I have to think it would be better than the diesel.

They only have to use those things when oil spills. Just one more reason we shouldn't be depending on oil for our energy needs anymore. We should have listened back in the early 70's when even Republicans like Nixon were warning us about continuing our oil dependence. We could be free of it by now.
But of course Reagan took the solar panels off the White House that Carter had installed.
What a great example for future generations he was.

They don't HAVE to use dispersants at all. Dispersants are used to hide the presence of oil, keeping it from floating on the surface of the water.

BP used almost 2 million gallons of Corexit and it has a synergistic effect... mixed with oil, toxicity is greater than the known toxicity of Corexit or oil separately.

My understanding is that it breaks up the oil into small droplets instead of leaving it as a large "slick" or spill that might have the possibility of being gathered up by those big spaghetti floaties (highly technical lingo, I know). Seems to me like it's something that has been used to give the appearance that a problem has been managed that actually makes the problem about 1000X worse.

Oh, is that what you meant by "hide" the presence of oil, E? I think I misunderstood your meaning when I first read your post.

Oh my god you must be kidding.

Sadly she's probably not.....removing solar panels from the WH roof by a republican led to the oil spill.....Must have been a headline from the Enquirer.....

The solution to ending or reducing oil dependence is NOT to waste billions subsidizing ethanol and doomed to fail solar startups.

BTW the solar panels were removed from the White House to fix a leaky roof and not replaced. They were donated to a university so they were used to heat water in a building until there was a system failure. eh hem........

But surely the solar panel removal had to be one of the first steps in global warming and all other climate problems...
