| On Monday, Dec. 8th., Greenpeace activists, without authorization/knowledge stormed into the Nazca Lines leaving an irreparable damage...FYI they Nazca Lines are eternal, any footprint, mark, trail, etc you leave there it would stay there forever, to visit by walking you need to follow special security measures, one of them are special shoes. They are wearing sneakers, and walking around like nothing, did I mention that the lines are on the desert so you get there by car, following rails already made....but they stormed with their car... as you can see on the red lines, they made a new line... Special shoes that are required at this limited-access site. Access to this site is EXTREMELY limited because it is so fragile. These activists were from Germany, Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Chile, Spain and Italy...they have apologized but they haven't acknowledged the damage they have done, I heard the Executive Director of this organization is coming to Peru to personally apologize...no matter how many times they apologize this is an eternal damage that will remain in the heart of all Peruvians forever. According to NBC: - Quote :
- The stunt sparked outrage from Peruvian officials as well as fans of the Nazca Lines, which were scratched in the desert surface centuries ago and depict plants, creatures and mythical beings. Archaeologists have suggested the mysterious lines might have been used as ritual astronomical calendars or religious symbols.
Deputy Culture Minister Jaime Castillo told The Associated Press that the move was a "slap in the face at everything Peruvians consider sacred."
Castillo said that no one is allowed into the area where the activists went without prior authorization, and that those who do get permission are required to wear special shoes so as not to disturb the patterns in the dirt. He told AP that those who were responsible would be sought out and could face charges of attacking archaeological monuments — a crime punishable by up to six years in prison.
"You walk there and the footprint is going to last hundreds or thousands of years," The Guardian quoted Castillo as saying. "And the line that they have destroyed is the most visible and most recognized of all." | |
