Why I Love Math

My daughter asked me tonight why I love math and seemingly spend so much time working with it (and too often get it wrong ).This is was my answer:

Before I watch this I am going to tell you why I love math... then I'm going to watch it. I love math because of the Fibonacci Sequence. I love the Fibonacci Sequence so much that "Fibonacci Sequence," "0112358" and riceme0112358 are my handles and email addresses other places. Total nerd, I know.

Okay, now I'm going to go watch and if I were a betting girl I'd bet you a nickel you love math for the same reason.

The Fibonacci Sequence is THE coolest thing in mathematics and the natural world.

I didn't really love learning math... until game theory.

But I always loved physics and knew I had to have the math behind the theories.

I hate math. But I do know that 4 in 10 is not a majority.

What do non-euclidean geometry, sea slugs, coral and crocheting have in common? This is SO cool. These women decided to build a coral reef model using crocheting to bring awareness to the destruction of coral reef, but they realized that the coral is extraordinarily tied into mathematic codes of non-euclidean geometry that were for years not believed to be possible to model. If you want to speed through it and just catch the math, start at 5:20, but watch the whole thing if you can.

That's kind of how I feel about math.

If you ask 10 people and 4 answer chocolate, and the rest do not answer, you have a majority of people that like chocolate...

As a carpenter, I used the Pythagorean Theorem all the time.   If you're laying out a foundation, you absolutely need to use the Pythagorean Theorem to make sure your foundation is square.

Funny, as a part-time substitute teacher many moons ago, I remember teaching the Pythagorean Theorem to middle-schoolers.

... and the Scarecrow in the Wizard of OZ said it wrong.
