The dynamical Casimir effect is the production of particles and energy from an accelerated moving mirror. This reaction was predicted by certain numerical solutions to quantum mechanics equations made in the 1970s. In May 2011 an announcement was made by researchers at the Chalmers University of Technology, in Gothenburg, Sweden, of the detection of the dynamical Casimir effect. In their experiment, microwave photons were generated out of the vacuum in a superconducting microwave resonator. These researchers used a modified SQUID to change the effective length of the resonator in time, mimicking a mirror moving at the required relativistic velocity. If confirmed this would be the first experimental verification of the dynamical Casimir effect.

Casimir effect 220px-Casimir_plates.svg

The typical example is of two uncharged metallic plates in a vacuum, placed a few nanometers apart. In a classical description, the lack of an external field also means that there is no field between the plates, and no force would be measured between them.[1] When this field is instead studied using the QED vacuum of quantum electrodynamics, it is seen that the plates do affect the virtual photons which constitute the field, and generate a net force[2]—either an attraction or a repulsion depending on the specific arrangement of the two plates. Although the Casimir effect can be expressed in terms of virtual particles interacting with the objects, it is best described and more easily calculated in terms of the zero-point energy of a quantized field in the intervening space between the objects. This force has been measured, and is a striking example of an effect captured formally by second quantization.[3][4] However, the treatment of boundary conditions in these calculations has led to some controversy. In fact "Casimir's original goal was to compute the van der Waals force between polarizable molecules" of the metallic plates. Thus it can be interpreted without any reference to the zero-point energy (vacuum energy) of quantum fields.

Very cool... this reminds me of something I learned long ago. It had to do with trapping or looping light... I'll see if I can remember it.

What are the practical uses of this effect?  I gather that it causes movement of plates toward each other in a vacuum, but don't see any practicality.  Help me out here.

I watched this video and it describes the effect, but it didn't explain how the effect would cause repelling forces.

Zero-point energy, also called quantum vacuum zero-point energy, is the lowest possible energy that a quantum mechanical physical system may have; it is the energy of its ground state. All quantum mechanical systems undergo fluctuations even in their ground state and have an associated zero-point energy, a consequence of their wave-like nature. The uncertainty principle requires every physical system to have a zero-point energy greater than the minimum of its classical potential well. This results in motion even at absolute zero. For example, liquid helium does not freeze under atmospheric pressure at any temperature because of its zero-point energy.

The concept of zero-point energy was developed in Germany by Albert Einstein and Otto Stern in 1913, as a corrective term added to a zero-grounded formula developed by Max Planck in 1900.[1][2] The term zero-point energy originates from the German Nullpunktsenergie.[1][2] An alternative form of the German term is Nullpunktenergie (without the s).

Vacuum energy is the zero-point energy of all the fields in space, which in the Standard Model includes the electromagnetic field, other gauge fields, fermionic fields, and the Higgs field. It is the energy of the vacuum, which in quantum field theory is defined not as empty space but as the ground state of the fields. In cosmology, the vacuum energy is one possible explanation for the cosmological constant.[3] A related term is zero-point field, which is the lowest energy state of a particular field.

Vacuum energy is an underlying background energy that exists in space throughout the entire Universe. One contribution to the vacuum energy may be from virtual particles which are thought to be particle pairs that blink into existence and then annihilate in a timespan too short to observe. They are expected to do this everywhere, throughout the Universe. Their behavior is codified in Heisenberg's energy–time uncertainty principle. Still, the exact effect of such fleeting bits of energy is difficult to quantify.

The effects of vacuum energy can be experimentally observed in various phenomena such as spontaneous emission, the Casimir effect and the Lamb shift, and are thought to influence the behavior of the Universe on cosmological scales. Using the upper limit of the cosmological constant, the vacuum energy in a cubic meter of free space has been estimated to be 10−9 joules (10-2 ergs).[1] However, in both Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) and Stochastic Electrodynamics (SED), consistency with the principle of Lorentz covariance and with the magnitude of the Planck constant requires it to have a much larger value of 10113 joules per cubic meter.[2][3] This huge discrepancy is known as the vacuum catastrophe.

I think you're going to have to take that other equation, mix it with this one and then you can go to the moon and back without anyone seeing you. It will be like you never did it, but did. Razz

1J = W X s

J - Joule
W - Watt
s- second

If we could tap 1% of the energy contained in 1 cubic meter of vacuum that's 100 Joules a second.

100J = 100W X s

Let's assume we have a box of 100 cubic meters or approximately a 5 meter cube. That would be 10,000 Joules a second.

10,000J = 10,000W X s

Now let's multiply that by the of seconds in an hour which is 3600 seconds.

10,000J X 3600s = 10,000W X 3600s

36,000,000J = 36,000,000W

3.6 X 10^7J = 3.6 X10^7W

Divide those watts by a thousand to get kilowatt hours.

3.6 X 10^4kW-h

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does a windmill give off that much energy in one hour?

It's renewable, doesn't clutter up the landscape like a windmill, and can be used anywhere in the universe.

Think about it... We're only tapping 1% of the energy available in one cubic meter according to the calculations.

If you've read my above posts theory says that energy is popping in and out of existence all the time.

Look at it as you can't see or feel it because you're at the same potential as every thing else in the universe. Therefore it can't hurt you... At least as long as you don't tap into it.

We're just tapping into that energy.

You could say we're all...

Oh I read it. and re read it ad re read it lol

then I went in search of questions that came to my teeny mind. Razz

Unfortunately for me, my mind wonders and it started wondering about all these pieces. Space is a vacuum, space is expanding, earth is within space and must be expanding too. Then it wondered off again and I thought earth is rapidly moving thru space, spinning and it wondered to what I had read about telsa saying something along the lines of tapping into space energy like a power plug and we would have all the energy we could ever use. My visualization of that is a big power cord plugged into the atmosphere.

now tell me, how do we take these invisible dark photons that are creating this energy all around us and in space into usable energy?

Create a large hadron collider around the earth. oh I had a dream about that a long time ago. I dreamt of looking up and seeing a little like street sweeper sweeping the sky. Suspect

I'm trying. scratch

I enjoy being over here with you smart men anyway. Smile

That's what my second post in this thread is about.

Read the part I highlighted in red.

If continued experiments can reproduce the result it may be possible to tap into that hidden reservoir of energy.
