PostSubject: searching for new doctor   Mon Sep 17, 2012 12:09 pm

A new health problem and a very unsatisfactory visit with my family doctor has me looking for a new physician. It seems to be a bit more complicated than in the old days of word of mouth and a phone call getting you in to see somebody. Sacred Heart Medical Group asks some basic questions--DOB, are you currently on medications, current insurance, phone #--and says they'll call me back to let me know if they can take me as a new patient. I also have a request in so that I can get a referral via email to a nearby family practice doctor.

Then there are the doctors affiliated with Baptist Hospital who have a 9 page document to fill out. The first three pages are agreements about the proper use of narcotics, agreement to use only one pharmacy, and agreement to use only their doctors. Yeah, I'm a doctor-shopping druggie for sure.

What the heck is going on? Do we have a doctor shortage in Pensacola?

That sounds strange. Out Innerarity way, there is a doctor in our subdivision (Perdido Bay CC)... a Dr. Lee... and he saw me right away.

Hell, my doctor here in Hoover, AL has a big sign on his office that says "Walk-ins Welcome".

I don't think I would like to go to an uppity doctor that has you apply to be a patient and "don't call me, we'll call you... maybe".

A friend has used this doctor for years and all she ever had to sign was an agreement to physically pick up any Rx's for controlled substances. That's federal law anyway, doctors cannot call those in.

Take a look at this Baptist Medical Group paperwork.

http://www.baptistmedicalgroup.org/sites/default/files/paperwork/BMGPaperwork_Westside_Spr2012.pdf

I have never seen anything like the Narcotics Agreement. It goes against the grain to sign that kind of crap. I can't breathe right, I need a doctor who will listen to my lungs and look at the test results I got from Urgent Care. Not some corporate doctor who is playing CYA or whatever is going on here.

Did you go through the SHMG appointment website? If so, I wouldn't waste any more time with it. Call the physicians' offices directly and see if you get a better response. The SHMG up on Airport Boulevard is great...that's a good place to start.

I tried to make an appointment online for a test through the Baptist site, but I balked at providing my SSN online. I backed out of the website and decided to call in lieu of using the 'net.

Birdy, I'm starting a new group for folks who live with health challenges. It's not public yet, but I'd love to have you as a member.

The new group will in no way detract from this forum or any other. It is a supplement for those of us who prefer to discuss some things, particularly health issue, in private.

I had a post, but I guess I didn't send it right. Birdy, I think I would look for a different doctor to patronize. My doctor's office calls me the next day after I take a blood test (to give me test results)... not one to two weeks.

And their collection policy sucks. What if you are not home when they called to tell you your check was refused by the bank? I certainly would not want to be liable for a bank NSF charge, then a doctor NSF charge, then a collection agency charge... that's bullshit.

PB, I went through the website but I have also called doctor's offices directly. I finally found a doctor affiliated with SHH who can see me on Wednesday. The person who scheduled me said he does not prescribe narcotics for any reason. I can live with that. If he can't or won't prescribe my seizure meds (phenobarbital) then I can ask for a referral to a neurologist.

PB, sent you a p.m.

None of the doctors I am calling are even asking why I need to see a doctor. WTF? Is that not as relevant as billing and insurance information?

I have my own health issues, which I don't discuss openly on the forums, PB. I wouldn't mind checking your new group out myself.

PB, I love the health group idea. The handful of people who know what I'm dealing with have made some helpful suggestions. But nothing gets past the hurdle of needing a new primary care physician and having such difficulty finding one.

I do finally have an appointment for Wednesday morning. If I don't like this doctor, I have no clue what my next step might be.

BB if you live on the west-side I recommend Dr Joe Dunn. He is located on Fairfield between Lillian Hwy and Hwy 98. He is affiliated with West Florida.

I hope you find a doctor you like. It is really important. I like the GP is see right here in Lillian. He's as good as any I've had in the "big city" and a lot easier to get in for an appointment.

I have seen Dr. Lee too and he is a good guy. He runs a very low key operation. Do not let his mediocre receptionist (cannot remember which one) dissuade you.

I have also seen Eric Hazbun, Sacred Heart through the Innerarity office next to McDonald's (a symbiotic relationship if ever there was one). He is thorough, intelligent and can recommend a specialist off the top of his hat.

Thanks, all, for your advice. I will be seeing Dr. Hoang as he is close to my home and affiliated with Sacred Heart. I was wonderfully impressed with Dr. Simhalchalan at Urgent Care and would use him in a heartbeat if he had his own practice. He ordered 3 separate diagnostic tests, all appropriate given the circumstances. My doctor did not even check the test results. All he said was, "did you get the EKG from our urgent care? I don't see the results here." I was appalled.

I am wondering if the paperwork for Baptist doctors and the statement that Dr. Hoang does not prescribe any narcotics is due to this:

I've been away for a while. Just lots going on but I'm back and I would be interested in a group like that if it is truly kept private. Thanks

I have Dr. Lee as my physician in West Pensacola. His office is in the development where I live. He is only 1.5 blocks from my front door.

He takes his time with you and explains everything in detail.

Your 1st appointment he would probably be with you for 1.5 to 2.0 hours.

I have been with him for probably 5 years. Prior to him I had Dr Hazbun who is about 1/2 mile from my house. I liked Dr. Hazbun, but he, like most doctors, would NOT spend that much time with you.

After all, time is money!!

I don't think anybody would be disappointed with Dr. Lee.

That said, if you looking for a doctor where your in and out in 15 minutes, he would not be the doctor for you.

I appreciate how much time he spends with me and how he does EXPLAIN everything.

He has opened his office for me on the weekends if I needed something that could not wait until Monday. Also, he has made house calls to friends of mine if they were too sick to come to the office.

How many doctors do you know that would do this?

He is the best doctor I have ever had.

Good luck.

I didn't see this until just now and I know it's old, but Birdy, should you find that you are in fact not happy with your new doctor I VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND Dr. Alicia Chen. She is affiliated with all local hospitals and her ofc is on 9-Mile Rd, just East of Target and Walgreen's across from the hospital (or, it used to be).

I used Dr. Flurry for years and then went on a hiatus from doctors (stupid I know) for a year or two and he dropped me. I now use Dr Whitter on spanish trail and he is OK except for the dang ,well, that thing every guy hates at the end of a yearly physical. Other than that i have nothing but good to say about him.

My doc says it isn't his favorite thing either.

This doc seems to enjoy it though.

Just checked back in and I am very pleased with the change I made. I am seeing Dr. Hoang, who is very thorough. Also Dr. Helmi with The Lung Group at Sacred Heart. Between the two of them, I am doing much better.
