| A little bit of history:
When I moved into this cottage 23 years ago, it had several different types of grass. The side yard was nothing but sand and rock and a tad of grass. The back yard was barren, with the exception of a tree my neighbor hated and I loved. Cherry Laurel, I think. It's called a trash tree around here, but it will provide the best shade there is. I loved it!
When Ivan went through in '95, she toppled my tree. After I cleaned it up, I realized I had nothing.....no pretty grass, really.....no flowers or cactus at all.
Starting around March 01, I began digging up my front yard. My neighbors were stunned. It took me over eight years to dig up the front and side yards and replace the soil. On March 23 of '04, I built a pond in the side yard that has since been redone.
We lost, sadly, the Mimosa tree I had planted in my front yard, so we had to take it down two weeks ago. That, however, gives me a chance to dig up the rest of that part of the front yard! We're going to put in an elevated waterfall and pond, all made of stone. Then, there will be wildflowers all around itTo the side, we already have a small trellis, so we will tie that in somehow.
It won't cost all the much, either. We have a HUGE mulch pile in the back, so we will just put that soil in with the front soil, then mix in some store bought soil. I found some that is better than Miracle Gro, so we'll use it. I can't recall the name!

| Wow, great contribution PB.
Have you tried growing plumeria (frangipani)? I am getting ready to start a couple of trees from cuttings.

| PB, here's a waterfall I put in about a decade ago. Unfortunately, we had to sell and move away. It was right outside of our bedroom window and the sound was wonderful. We had a 300 gallon pond at the top of the stream... A stone-lined stream... And a 150-gallon pond at the bottom (not shown) with a pump. | |

Thanks, PB. Here's a pic of the upper portion. You will lose a lot of water to leaks and evaporation, but it is worth it. The whole thing was about 30' long. Plastic pools from Lowe's, heavy pond liner under stream, two pallets of stone. We had a 3' drop over the length of the stream... it was in the front yard, next to the driveway.

| Eric, your stream is so inspiring. Hubby is hard at work here at home today, but I am going to show him your pictures on his next break. He will probably have some questions about construction.
Thanks!!! | |

| Eric, did you run a pipe out that had the wire in it? Was it hard-wired, or did you use an extension cord for power?
Did you buy the rocks locally? I know there's a place on Gulf Beach Highway that sells them.

I'll tackle most anything, although I am an epic failure with African violets. My grandmother's skill I do NOT have. Before my Mom passed away, it was our yearly ritual to get together and put annuals in her front porch planters. Near the end of her independent living, she routinely forgot they needed water, so I would go water them every day in the hot summer. It was a wonderful excuse to just pop by and check on my momma, since by that time she didn't want company that often. Over the years, I've learned that herbs do great in planters in our climate. Although my veggies are on their last stems, my herbs are all flush with health fight now. Pretty, too. If I'm going to go to the trouble of planting something outside in a pot, I want it to be something I won't have to drag into the greenhouse in the winter. Herbs fit that bill perfectly, as long as the pot is deep. Herbs have the added value of making food taste better, too!

Did you buy the rocks locally? I know there's a place on Gulf Beach Highway that sells them. I direct buried Romex (stiff copper house wire)... yeah, should have been in conduit... and installed a switchbox at the pump and plugged the pump into it. The rocks were Tennessee flagstone. It wasn't from the Hoover area.

| Thanks for the info, Eric. We ran Romex through the tube (or whatever it's called) for our current pond.
We found another neat rock shop over near Elberta last week. Looks like we'll have plenty of places to go....it's just a matter of comparing prices now.

| Since we are talking greenhouses and ponds, PB, you need to clear out all of those beautiful flowers from your greenhouse, and turn it into an aquaponics operation!

| Great idea, Z! We have enough room in the greenhouse to do both. I think I may try it.
Fall and winter are the best times in our greenhouse....I'm looking forward to October.

Have you tried growing plumeria (frangipani)? I am getting ready to start a couple of trees from cuttings. I'll start a thread on it. I have some huge Plumeria and about 15 cuttings in pots at the moment. Have to get some pics later since everything is dormant and ugly at present. FYI. the prison camp behind the papermill has a huge selection of plumeria at dirt cheap prices

| Calling all greenthumbs! What is this beauty in my yard?? Everything else is native to the area, xeriscaping-type stuff and I know what everything else is... except a damned Hedge tree which I hate, and I've no idea why anyone would want one except for firewood, as they produce a "fruit" (non edible, to my knowledge) that feels like a porcupine bit ya if you pick it up. :/ This looks so familiar to me, but I just can't place it... Danke! EDIT: Ooo, those came out small on this page... click 'em and they'll blow up for ya. | |

| Thanks EE! This guy is above his top elevation at my house, so I hope we don't get another hard freeze and the blooms get wiped out. That must have been what happened last year because I never saw it in bloom.
Sure is pretty.
Dangit. Just got an email from Mom... she says we're supposed to get a snow storm for Easter. Not what my intel says, but she could be right. Weather changes here like the time.

| I've been in this house since 2007 and never saw a blossom on a few of my trees. This year, there are 2 of them loaded with cumquats.. LOL | |
