f You Think You are Beaten

Walter D. Wintle

If The Road Not Taken It Couldn’t be Done A Smile If You Think You are Beaten
In Whom Men Condemn If I Knew You Ode to Googlebot More Poems

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you’d like to win but think you can’t,
It’s almost certain you won’t.
Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.

That reminds me of the story of two strangers that come into a small town.  Both talk to one man... let's call him Joe.

The first stranger says the town stinks, the people are rude, and he can't wait to get out of this hellhole.  Joe agrees.

The second stranger says he really enjoys his stay, says the people are friendly, and he would like to settle here in this nice town.  Joe agrees.

Joe knows that you make your own path in life and your attitude influences your perception.  Nothing he can say or do to the sourpuss would change that perception, so Joe just agreed with him.

By Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Solitude

Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone;
For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air;
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.

Rejoice, and men will seek you;
Grieve, and they turn and go;
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not need your woe.
Be glad, and your friends are many;
Be sad, and you lose them all,
There are none to decline your nectared wine,
But alone you must drink life's gall.

Feast, and your halls are crowded;
Fast, and the world goes by.
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,
But no man can help you die.
There is room in the halls of pleasure
For a large and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on
Through the narrow aisles of pain.

I guess the name says it - "she writes."  I write fiction, creative non-fiction, help out a few friends on technical editing, and occasionally write poetry.  Here's one I wrote quite a while back:

On the grey days,
the ones that are blue and
impede my steps,
I think of you.
Sadness, its source not the matter,
leads me to you.
Thoughts of us-
the short season of us-
impact every living moment.
You remain in the broken place
of my heart.
Together and safe.

The mind is full of somber memories. Oh, if we could only be able to go back in time and redo some things...

I hesitate thinking those things, because I might have traveled a different path and never hooked up with my lovely bride Christine.

Consider that it is not a romantic poem. It's one of the things I love about writing...the interpretations when one shares. Always opens lots of possibilities.

I wrote this about five years ago. I'm always afraid of not writing poetry properly, but I am very fond of this one - correct or not. Definitely from the heart.
