Thank you Obamacare!!!!! Empty
PostSubject: Thank you Obamacare!!!!!   Thank you Obamacare!!!!! EmptyThu Mar 27, 2014 3:53 pm

I have a friend who has not had medical insurance in the past but who will be covered as of today with their premium completely subsidized by Obamacare. This person makes barely above the federal poverty line- if they made just a little less they would be caught in the Non-Medicaid expansion that so many states, including Florida, have opted for. They would be completely without coverage as they have been in the past. This is such a relief for this individual, who has had problems with asthma for years and no insurance to go to a regular doctor. They have frequented ER's , costing taxpayers hundreds of dollars when they could not pay their bill.

This is the first day I've been completely sure Obamacare is a great thing. Glad my friend informed me of the situation. Otherwise I would still be wondering. Now if we could just get Florida to give a dang about their working poor.

The money has to come from somewhere. The taxpayers will still be paying the bill.

I'm sure we will be, but I'd much rather pay the bill for insurance for the poor than for overseas wars that don't accomplish a thing. Also, with preventative healthcare, my friend might not have had to make all those ER visits. It could be cheaper in the long run.

Yeah, I would love to see us out of overseas wars too.

And if we just quit handing out foreign aid like we were flush with cash, that'd be great too.

Let's take care of America's needs first.

So what, exactly, has changed?

There is too much waste in the ACA, the guvmint should have expanded Medicare and called it a day. All the money wasted on new computer systems that only half work (if at all), new regulations, mountains of paperwork, reworking insurance networks due to many medical facilities refusing to participate, etc. could have gone toward opening up Medicare to previously unqualified people.

For every 1 person the ACA "helps" there are many many others that it hurts through unwanted participation..........

There were/are options to reform the medical system but this law is just horrible.  People have got to realize that there is nothing for free and if it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't.  Once again this entitlement society seems to be ok with the idea that the working class citizens should get stuck with another bill.  Gotta disagree 'nochain' remember Sen Reid said ALL the horror stories about [name] cowh healthcare WERE ALL LIES made up by the republicans! Instead of 'Thank you [name cowh healthcare!!!!!!!!!] it should be thank-you taxpayers/businesses/small businesses that will be picking up the tab.

Here's one thing that has changed mediawatcher.  It's only by one percent, but more Americans now support Obamacare than oppose it.  I back this statement up with facts:

http://news.yahoo.com/49-percent-support-obamacare-hits-high-211806422--abc-news-politics.html

That was a few weeks ago, and I suspect that with the possible addition of maybe the one or two million people who have actually signed up for it the last few days, the rate of support may be up even more today. This is an existing law that Republicans think they can change if they can just take the white house. In two years when they get a chance to make that change, it's very possible that even more than the 6-8 million Americans will be using the system. In addition to those users, there are at least another 4 million that Obamacare has helped by assisting the states in expanding their medicaid systems. Already over 10 million Americans have been helped- just give it another couple of years.

Then let WHOEVER is the candidate of the Republican party try to campaign against it.  Good luck with that, I'll guarantee you, it is not going to work. Just like the 50 or so times the House has tried to repeal it already have not worked.  Obamacare is a done deal.  Benghazi will be 3 years old by then.

And by the way mediawatcher, when the time comes for you to get medicare, I hope you will resist the urge to sign up for it. Because it's just another example of the momma and papa state you so despise.
Really folks, your party is dead meat unless they come up with some new ideas to campaign on.

I agree with you nochain- the government should have expanded Medicare down to the age of 55 as John McCain wanted, but they did not do that because of opposition from both parties. This is what we got, and I'm beginning to think it is not so bad myself. We'll know a lot more in the 2 1/2 years Obama has left in the White HOuse.

I'm not a big fan of polls since questions can be written to skew the numbers in favor of one side or another but Rasmussen is fairly respected for objectivity.

The latest Rasmussen poll (31 Mar 2014):

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 40% of Likely U.S. Voters think the federal government should require every American to buy or obtain health insurance. Forty-six percent (46%) oppose this so-called individual mandate. Fourteen percent (14%) are undecided.

Most Americans still don't want to be forced into another federal mandate. One thing I find curious is the missing 40 million "without" insurance - where are they now that the ACA have flung open the doors to "affordable insurance"? Very curious......

According to the CBO the net effect on the deficit due to the ACA is to add $41B in 2014. Of course the cost of the web site and backbone interconnectivity to state and insurance exchanges alone is expected to reach $1B. Someone didn't think this "plan" through.

Actually, according to this CBO report, the deficit is going to shrink for the next couple of years. What
CBO report were you referring to, because this one came out less than 2 months ago?

http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2014/02/04/cbo-deficit-to-shrink-recovery-to-slow-obamacare-to-mean-fewer-hours-worked

It also states that Americans will work fewer hours out of choice because of Obamacare, not from being forced to work less hours.
Again, I'm not sure what CBO report you are referring to, but this one came out in February.

The POTUS said today the the time for trying to repeal Obamacare is over. How many American voters who are receiving their primary insurance through Obamacare and having it subsidized by the government will be willing to vote for a presidential candidate who runs on a platform of taking that benefit away? None is the amount I would predict. The CBO predicts that by 2016 at least 20 million Americans will be getting their insurance through Obamacare, and that does not include the millions more who will be covered by Medicaid in the 28 states who are accepting the federal expansion. In addition to that, millions of young adults are able to stay on their parents insurance until 26, women can't be charged more for insurance than men, and people who have had pre-existing conditions will be able to actually HAVE insurance that didn't before.

Rasmussen is a pretty much Republican polling organization. I'll trust the ABC news poll before I'll trust Rasmussen. A lot depends on how they ask the questions.

I wasn't too crazy about Obamacare at the start, but I'm starting to warm up to it now. It is the law of the land and I can't see any party winning a nationwide election by opposing it. Hey, you saw what happened in 2012 with Mitt Romney.

The 'nanny state' that I refer to and complain about are the so called freebies that are handed out to those that have never contributed.  Before the ranting starts---that does not include those that are truly needy and should be taken care of.  Really don't understand how anyone (either party) could be against that.  If someone is able to work then they should do so. If someone needs short term assistance it should be available but should not become an occupation and/or opportunity to do nothing.  The waste and fraud is what should have been cleaned up a long time ago and neither party has the spine to do anything.  Waste and Fraud should be a concern not only in this matter but across the board in all agencies.

Never complained about anyone that has contributed over their working lives signing up for or collecting what they deserve.  Those that have milked/taken advantage of the system are the problems and that should tick everyone off not matter the party affiliation involved.  Agree also that there should have been an expansion of Medicare but that was not an option and when a system is put in place and the philosophy was...just pass it and then we'll see what's inside...can't be the correct approach.

Lastly, as you've stated this being the 'law of the land' then please explain how members of Congress and their staffs are exempt, certain unions, certain corporations, businesses etc.,. Difficult to say it's the law when it doesn't apply to all. Like the interview with Sebelius when asked if she had signed up..."I have my own healthcare"...so is she and others violating the law of the land?

The fact is - unfortunately - the ACA is unlikely to be trashed although it's obvious this administration continues to do end runs around Congress to apply band-aids, patches, and special treatment for certain groups. This is a violation of the spirit if not the letter of the law - makes you wonder why there are all these delays and changes - hmmm, perhaps that's the only way to achieve the "numbers" necessary to make it LOOK like it's not a failure. This train wreck will gradually evolve until it looks nothing like it did at the start. And that's a failure since it affirms this was the wrong way to go about such a massive (but still needed) correction to the broken health care system. Better learn how to spell "single payer".

4 Years old with 36 delays and changes [and counting]...such a wonderful 'Law of the Land'...well for those that have to abide by the law and are not exempt from the mandate....The premiums are not lower...can't keep your coverage or doctor as promised its been lie after lie and broken promises--yes certainly several violations of the spirit of the law...Law of the Land is a joke and sadly we are the suckers!..

First of all, nearly everyone who is getting a subsidy for their insurance has worked for it. You cannot get a subsidy unless you have taxable income above the poverty line, which means you are a TAXPAYER. So slamming those who are getting subsidies as slackers is totally unfair.  Those who work full time, as many hours as most Americans, and who work  for minimum wage only earn around 15 K per year and are being subsidized. Those who only make around 12K which is barely above poverty are also being subsidized, and in fact, if you are single and make as much as 40K per year, you can still get SOME subsidy for your insurance. These people are not lazy shiftless Americans who refuse to work and are milking the system. They are taxpayers, exactly the same as you are, so they are helping support this government, exactly the same as you do.
If you believe anyone who doesn't make over 40,000 is worthless and couldn't be a hard working American, then objecting to the subsidies is your problem. Taxpayers are not worthless people living off the nanny state. Those who are on Medicaid are under the poverty level, and most of them are on some type of government assistance, but they received Medicaid BEFORE Obamacare, for the most part. Definitely in our state which didn't expand Medicaid.

Exactly what lazy worthless people are you talking about? The welfare recipients who are NOT on Obamacare or the non welfare recipients who work 40 hours per week but you feel are leeches on the nanny state?
Seems to me you have little concern for more than half of the people who live in this country.

And Ms Sebilius is breaking no law. She has health insurance. I don't know nor care what she pays for it.
Nothing changed with my insurance nor with the insurance plans of anyone I know that already had coverage.
People that can't afford it are getting it. And you must be above poverty to get a subsidy, which means that chances are, you are a WORKING TAXPAYER, helping to pay for Obamacare with your yearly contributions to the IRS.

Thanks for the clarification...so the law of the land is not really the law of the land and those exempted are excluded from following the law. But, you are correct however when you pointed out that the taxpayers are paying the bill for this horrible legislation. "People that can't afford it are getting it"...what are the numbers that are now insured and how much did it really cost to do so. This shouldn't be kept a secret from us that are paying the bills.

Since it's obvious something has to be done about healthcare and ACA is a hideously expensive, inefficient, and too far-reaching effort wouldn't it make sense to expand an existing program to enable otherwise ineligible people to have coverage? Sort of like the Florida Hurricane "Fund". Those who can't obtain insurance elsewhere or who can't afford it go into an expanded Medicare pool.

"People that can't afford it are getting it"...what are the numbers that are now insured and how much did it really cost to do so. This shouldn't be kept a secret from us that are paying the bills."

That one statement is the whole purpose of the law- that Americans who couldn't previously afford health insurance are now getting it. Yes, other Americans are paying for it. I don't have a problem in the world with my taxes going for the healthcare of others. It "contributes to the general welfare" of my country, which is an idea included in the preamble to our Constitution. The numbers are out there- 7.1 million signed up under the exchanges, around 4 million more now have medicaid due to the law, and about 6 million 18-26 year olds are remaining on their parents policies when they could not do so previously. That adds up to at least 21 million Americans who are receiving a benefit from the law. Adding in the fact that women can no longer be charged more than men and pre-existing conditions must be accepted, there are a lot more than that who benefit.
I didn't see this law as a good idea until it came into effect and I began to see that it is working for people I actually know. I think that's going to be the general movement in thinking of a lot of people. When they hear stories about it working, they'll finally come to accept it. It ain't going anywhere so far as being repealed is concerned.
And people with tattoos get sick too. They don't deserve to have to lie on the side of the street and die because someone disagrees with their choices in life.

Extremely obese people who smoke certainly deserve unqualified insurance, obviously they are doing everything they can to help themselves, right? I like the way you glossed over my suggestion that an expanded Medicare system would be better than than the ACA. I guess the idea of saving tax dollars is unappealing?

Then explain how smokers became public enemies in our society? Are they doing anything illegal? Reading the post above made me laugh...some of the same people on the left and right were the loudest voices screaming that smokers were a burden on the healthcare system and asking why those that make healthier choices be forced to pay for their bad choices...guess that part was missing in the 'Preamble'. Smokers are now limited by laws as to where they are allowed to take part in a legal activity with a legal product so who or what will be next? Obese folks being banned from fast food places because those that run healthcare know what's best for them? People that consume alcohol? Should laws/regulations be implemented to limit products at can be harmful to some people?

I'll support the ACA 100% when the politicians and others exempted by the law are under the same exact plan as the average homeless LEGAL CITIZEN on the street...

Everyone deserves decent healthcare. Yes, extremely obese people, people with tattoos, people who smoke themselves to death. IMO it is a human rights issue. We are all human beings and should care about each other, and not sit around making decisions on who deserves to live and who deserves to die.
Hey, I don't want to be on the "death panels" that Republicans claim are out there for old people and I sure don't want to decide who gets to see a doctor based on my view of somebody else's morality. That's not any different from those non-existent death panels Fox likes to talk about so often.
I'm pretty sure there are some people who would want me to be at the end of the line for healthcare too.

And I didn't gloss over anything. If you want to expand Medicare to EVERYONE I certainly would think that would be better than the ACA. Get rid of private health insurance companies altogether.
I'm gonna take a wild guess and say you don't want everybody to have medicare though.
If you do, you're okay in my book.
