PostSubject: Home Depot Stores   Tue Feb 04, 2014 7:58 am

A few days ago, I heard that some of the Home Depot stores stayed open for people unable to get home during the ice storm last week.  Sunday, I stopped at the store on Mobile Hwy to ask about it.  They said none of the Pensacola stores stayed open, but some of them in GA, MS, and AL did, mainly as a place for people to stay and keep warm..  They didn't say anything about food, drinks, or anything else, but I didn't ask..  They are a home improvement store, not a furniture and bedding store, so I imagine people just found a dry warm spot and kept out of the cold, hoping to get a little sleep if they could.  Home Depot deserves a big thank you for helping out when people needed help.

I saw pictures of a guy in a Home Depot apron here in Birmingham, standing in the snow by the road.

He held a sign that said "free coffee" (inside the store).  The roads were at a standstill by then and I'm sure he had some takers for coffee and shelter.

Lots of folks turned out to help others.  Our ABC station set up on an overpass on a mountain top and took pics of people trying to make it up the mountain on the interstate.  Groups of folks got out of their cars and pushed other people's cars.

My son spent the day pushing cars on a busy highway close to his apartment.

Kukdos to Home Depot, though.  They're good neighbors.

Schools got caught flat-footed and teachers and students had to stay there, some for two nights.  School busses full of kids had to divert to nearby schools when they realized they weren't going to be able to take kids home on the icy roads.

Parents were very appreciative of the teachers and school staff taking care of their kids when their anguished parents couldn't get to their children.  Monday morning, the schools were inundated with homemade cakes and stacks of Krispy Kreme doughnut boxes brought in as a "thank you" by parents.

In all of the icy gloom and doom, I bet you didn’t hear about the heroic and generous actions of a Chick-fil-A along Highway 280 in Birmingham, Alabama, did you?
Mark Meadows, owner of the Chick-fil-A closed early the day of the storm and sent all of his employees home. However, the employees and Meadows soon discovered that they were not going to be able to get home with all of the stranded motorists stuck on the roads. Some of the cars near the restaurant had been stranded for up to 7 hours.

The next time I go thru Birmingham, I'll make sure I stop to give them a little business and thanks..

Nah.  I didn't see it.  The media I was watching was more interested in reporting traffic flow (or lack thereof) and what was near the roads, school/gubment and business closings.
