I settled that dilemma a few years ago. I marked the top and how it fits in the port. Now all I have to do is look before insertion.

On another note, I read about a new generation of Memory Sticks that are coming will fit into the port in either direction.

It will be the new USB micro spec. Yeah, I read about that too. The top has that symbol on it that kinda looks like a trident, but they're never in a contrasting color and you have to hold them just right to see that symbol.
