From the Internet:

Today’s lesson in Irony…

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever, to 46 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us “Please Do Not Feed the Animals.” Their stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.

Thus ends today’s lesson.

I don't think that anyone in America should be proud of having 46 million Americans on food stamps. There are a lot of hard working poor people among that number though, and prior to the food stamp program Americans were actually starving to death in some parts of our country. I know that's hard to believe, but in places like Appalachia, it was true.

I'd like to see less people on food stamps by adopting a minimum wage in this country where anyone who worked for 40 hours a week would not need stamps to buy their groceries. Until we have a real living minimum wage, I won't denigrate those who are doing their best to make ends meet.

Yes, some people abuse them, but not the majority. I know some people find that hard to believe, but it's true.

One problem I have seen are folks who keep having kids without the means (and in too many cases the motivation) to earn enough to support them. When I was in the Navy I had some sailors who fit the "too many kids for their salary" category and had to rely on food stamps. Personal responsibility and self-restraint are hard concepts to grasp for a growing number of Americans.

Someone (in the media) a few years ago used that argument and illustrated with a photo using wildlife and was branded a 'racist' and 'anti-poor'....BUT agree with exactly what you've posted and that's why there have been decades of folks that have used the handouts as a form of employment and career opportunity...And this program has now been wrapped into the Farm Bill so that those that oppose will be called anti-farmers....

A young man with his pants hanging half off his ass, two gold front teeth,
and a half inch thick gold chain around his neck; walked into the local
welfare office to pick up his check.

He marched up to the counter and said, "Hi. You know, I just HATE drawing
welfare. I'd really rather have a job. I don't like taking advantage of
the system, getting something for nothing."

The social worker behind the counter said "Your timing is excellent. We
Just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur
and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter. You'll have to drive around in
his 2012 Mercedes-Benz CL, and he will supply all of your clothes."

"Because of The long hours, meals will be provided. You'll also be expected
to escort the daughter on her overseas holiday trips. This is rather
awkward to say, but you will also have, as part of your job, the assignment
to satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her mid-20's and has a
rather strong sex drive."

The guy, just plain wide-eyed, said, "You're bullshittin' me!"

The social worker said, "Yeah, well... You started it." .
