PostSubject: I'm in the Hunt for a New Monitor   Thu Aug 09, 2012 12:43 am

I'm reviewing the particulars of monitors now. I have a 7 year old 19" Acer LCD monitor that works fine, but am looking at upgrading to a widescreen model. I want one with LED backlighting and my new one is going to be mounted on a VESA arm (I am looking at those, too).

With a VESA mount, I will free-up a lot of space on my desk, and be able to move the monitor closer to me, or further away, as necessary.

I have looked at four ViewSonic models, and I am also going to look at Acer, ASUS, and a couple of HP models before I make my decision.

If you ever wondered what makes up a flat panel display and how it works, this 4:53 video is worth a watch. It is a fascinating presentation:

I paid two grand on my 24" 1080p monitor... but that was about 4 years ago. Monitors available now have much faster refresh rates and are significantly cheaper... a little more than a tenth of the price I paid.

Damn dog was chasing the cat and knocked it off the desk, breaking the stand. The monitor still works, but it's just propped up and looks jury-rigged.

I am actually reviewing 15 different monitors so I can set up a fourth affiliate marketing website, but one of those will be picked to replace my 19" Acer, which has worked admirably for 7-years--but I am ready for something new.

Yes, you can get a 24" 1080p monitor for about $180 now. I think it is also crucial to get one with LED backlighting. I keep reading about the importance of dynamic contrast ratio and how LED backlighting radically improves this.

Eric, if yolu have jury-rigged your broken computer stand, you should consider a VESA mount, if your monitor is equipped to be mounted this way. Here is the one I picked out for my new setup:

Z, there is about 3" of 2 & 1/2" diameter stump sticking down out of the bottom. I'd have to jury-rig some kind of clamp to fit that stand. I already have one stand like that and haven't bothered to rig it to work. That monitor is REALLY heavy too and it would take a Herculean clamp system for it to be stable.

Since I'm not working with lots of paper, I really don't need to use the desk. Since my laptop is faster than the PC, and the recliner in the living room is so much more comfortable, I hardly use the PC or that monitor anymore.

Hey, and that is why they call notebook computers "laptops." I prefer working from a standard keyboard and setup, but must also be comfortable. The furniture used with my computer facilitates this. I often keep 8-10 windows (or even more) open at once when computing, and with a widescreen monitor, I hope to be able to keep two full pages open side-by-side, at the same time. With the VESA mount, I will be able to pull the monitor closer to me. My eyes are not what they used to be, and this is going to help me greatly.

I have a cheapo Best Buy "Dynex" brand 32" hooked up to my laptop. $300.
