Most recently that I am aware of was just a few months ago here in town. Some whack-job shot a turbine that's right off a public road with a .22 rifle while it was running. He got "lucky" and hit the flex coupling, which had the effect of making it explode into a gajillion pieces, and pieces of it came flying out the side of the nacelle (the fiberglass cowling that houses the machine head) and stuck in the ground several hundred feet from the turbine.

People are dumb. It's unfathomably stupid to do something like that... there are big, heavy parts spinning extremely quickly in those machines. The high speed shaft spins @1600+ RPM (depending on the turbine and generator). He's lucky he didn't get hurt or killed pulling that stunt.

While that is surely funny, I am not certain it is true unless it's new since 2011. I've flown into and through Schiphol many times (always with a truckload of men) and I'm nearly 100% positive they would have shared this bit of man-fun with me.

The last time I flew through there on our way home from Denmark I had my first experience with the "full body scanners." As I always do, I told the woman that I had a metric ton of hardware in my left knee/tibia, and showed her the scars when asked (the plate is actually visible). I got pulled aside for what I always humorously refer to as "the cavity search" because they ALWAYS pat me down... So all the guys were waiting for me and watching as the TSA woman GRABBED MY HOO-HA, THEN SQUEEZED BOTH MY BOOBS.



I was so stunned that I could not move. She actually had to shove me to get me to walk away after she told me I was okay to go, toward all the guys... who immediately asked me if I would kindly go back through a second time so they could get pictures... WANKERS! Only consolation was that they were all probably every bit as shocked as I was.

Yeah, apparently it is. While what she did to me shocked the hell out of me, mostly I found it to be just funny until after I'd gotten home and thought about it a little bit. If she did the same thing to a woman who'd been recently sexually assaulted, it could easily cause further emotional pain and suffering and bring up feelings of re-victimization. Had I thought about that at the time it happened I most certainly would have gotten her name and filed a report... not because it bothered ME (because it really didn't), but so that hopefully the above scenario would not play out. I've always felt terribly that I didn't think about that at the time and get her name to file a report. But I was just so shocked...

USA-17 (formerly known as BMW Oracle Racing 90 or BOR90) is a 90 ft (27 m) LWL, 90 ft (27 m) beam, sloop rigged one-off racing sail trimaran built by the USA sailing team BMW Oracle Racing for use in a Deed of Gift challenge for the 33rd America’s Cup. Designed by VPLP Yacht Design with consultation from Franck Cammas and his Groupama multi-hull sailing team, BOR90 is very light for her size being constructed almost entirely out of carbon fiber and epoxy resin, and exhibits very high performance being able to sail at 2.0 to 2.5 times the true wind speed (though some rumors have claimed 4× TWS).

She can apparently sail at 20 degrees off the apparent wind. The boat sails so fast downwind that the apparent wind she generates is only 5-6 degrees different to that when she is racing upwind; that is, the boat is always sailing upwind with respect to the apparent wind and thus ‘sailing faster than the wind‘

The USA-17 trimaran won the 2010 America’s Cup from the defending champion Alinghi 5 in February.

I completely agree. When first started in the wind industry as a mechanic I was the only girl amongst 300+ men in the factory. I worked hard and kept up with them to the best of my ability, earning my chops. They treated me like one of the guys and I would have had it no other way. It was a normal thing at the end of a long shift for them to pat each other on the butts (as athletes often do) with a, "Good work / Good shift / See you tomorrow morning, brother" sort of sign off, and they did the same to me. I never took any offense to it as it was not sexual in nature in the least... it was a friendly teammate sort of thing. Sometimes they jokingly called me "brother" too, but usually they referred to me as "little sister" or simply by my last name. Not a single one of them EVER grabbed a "handful," as the woman in the photo above did.

The only trouble I ever had with issues of a sexual nature were with executive level management, which I handled in my own way instead of going to HR, which was useless at this business... Except on one occasion when someone I'd previously trusted went to HR FOR me, which was a freaking disaster, of course... Typical blame the victim BS, "You teased him, didn't you?" and crap like that. Ya, right. He was a putrid, disgusting, married perv. Not likely.
