Late-night melee forces deputies to clear Pensacola Beach boardwalk

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office closed the Portofino Boardwalk, Casino Beach parking lot and Quietwater Beach parking lot early this morning after fights and disturbances led to several arrests in the Pensacola Beach area.

Matt Baxter, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said that they don’t have an estimate on the number of arrests or people involved yet, but he said that the fights were “rampant.”

At least one person with a firearm was arrested and charged with a weapons offense, Baxter said.

Escambia County deputies responded to about a dozen calls at the beach between midnight and 1 a.m., including disturbances, fights, suspicious persons, disorderly conduct and traffic stops.

The Sheriff’s Office closed the boardwalk and public parking lots and began directing traffic off the beach at approximately 1:45 a.m. to prevent any more fights or property damage, Baxter said.

There was also a four-car accident near the toll booth on the beach, which partially blocked one lane of traffic leaving the beach, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Gulf Breeze Police Department assisted with the accident, but no further information is available at this time.

A 57-year-old man was killed Friday night in the second fatal shooting in Pensacola in a week, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office has released very few details about the incident except that the shooting happened at about 9:35 p.m. in the 2800 block of West Brainerd Street near North V Street. The victim died at Baptist Hospital about 11 p.m. Friday.

The victim’s identity has not been released yet pending notification of his next of kin, Escambia County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Melissa Rawson said.

The Brownsville neighborhood was quiet on Saturday, and neighbors said that they did not know anything about the shooting. One neighbor said that the area is pretty quiet and laid-back, but he still makes sure to keep his doors locked.

The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate. This is the 11th homicide in the county this year, and there have been four homicides in Pensacola city limits.

No suspects have been located or arrested, but Rawson said that the suspect was possibly driving a dark extended-cab truck.

Just a week before this shooting, 19-year-old Matthew Cox was shot and killed while being robbed outside his mother’s home in the 4400 block of Deauville Way. The shooting occurred at about 11:45 p.m. last Friday, July 27.

I overdrank em one time and threw it all up. Me and alcohol mixed with dairy products don't get along too well.

Can somebody tell me what a Bushwhacker is? I'm mostly a wine drinker and have never gotten up the nerve to try one.

An old surfing buddy of mine from high school got caught up in that mess and went to jail. The way he tells it, he gave a friend a lift into town and didn't know it was for a delivery. He got sent away for trafficking.

I used to enjoy a good toot, but that was thirty years ago. I don't think my body could stand it anymore... with my luck, I'd probably keel over and be a candidate for pushing up daisies.

I really only did it one night and it was about that same time ago. I had done some of the really cut stuff and thought it was just bs.
But then one night a friend brings over a bunch of really pure stuff. I got as high as a kite and we kept doing it until almost dawn.
I swore it off after that for two reasons. One was how expensive it was. The other was the high it gave. I got a really euphoric feeling after
snorting it but then very soon after that I started to come way down and had to toot it again. Over and over and over.
The high was so intense that the feeling coming down was awful until you did another line.
Not for me.

And then later in life when crack came around I knew someone who got totally hooked on it. I tried doing it but it didn't get me very high and it was like smoking the foam cushions inside your pillowcases. Had that same taste to it.
Not for me.
