PostSubject: We bought a Lenovo laptop   Wed May 22, 2013 9:15 am

We were finally able to buy a decent laptop for my husband's business purposes. We bought a gently-used Lenovo, and it's fantastic!

I recall someone - I think it was Azadeh, but maybe it was you, Riceme? - recommending the Lenovo brand in the past.

At any rate, we are more than pleased with the Lenovo's performance so far.

My wife and I have Lenovo laptops. So far, so good. I am spoiled by the instant-on aspect of the iPad, though. I have read where I can add a SSD to my laptop and keep the hard drive. The SSD will be used for booting purposes (mainly).

The SSD accesses resources that are allocated for another feature... One that I will have to disable... But I don't use that feature anyway. It may be the feature that allows the laptop to become a wifi hotspot.

Ya Melissa, Lenovos are good machines. I had one at a business I used to work for and it was a fast, reliable laptop... I liked it. I'm glad you all were able to get a nice used machine for yourselves... I hope you're happy with it Smile.

Oh, wow, I am SO happy with it! It's like a brand new machine, even though we bought it used. My husband is able to use it everywhere on the road with our Virgin Mobile stick, although we are looking for less expensive broadband access. My Samsung Blaze II phone is useless as a hotspot for him, since T Mobile coverage is scarce in lower Alabama. That's one reason we didn't want to go through T Mobile for a broadband stick.

Can anyone suggest a better way to go for broadband access on the road?

For Internet access, I use Verizon's cell service. For a couple of years, I used Verizon's dedicated hotspot device, but didn't like carrying along a hotspot and a cell phone. (It was like carrying two cell phones).

Around 2005 or 6, I used to use my first smartphone (an old Palm Treo, I think) as a hotspot using PDAnet software, but Verizon got wise to it. Eventually, the PDAnet access was forwarded to a Verizon page where they offered hotspot access for a fee. Damn, BUSTED!

My last two phones (Motorola Droid Razr Max HD, Samsung Galaxy Note II) have had Verizon's speedy 4G/LTE hotspot feature. Besides the cost, the main downside to having a hotspot feature on your phone is that it uses a lot of battery resources. The two phones I mentioned are well known for having long battery life.
